ESP light flashing when cornering possibly since tyre change

Featured Replies

I'm just wondering whether anyone else has had their ESP light flashing frequently when corning after having new tyres ? I've had my red edition since new (2017) and never noticed the ESP light ever come on whilst driving. In the last couple of weeks I've found the light flashes almost every time I corner at more than about 40mph. My drive to work is on an "A road" which is quite fast with sweeping corners and continuous gradient changes too. Actually, it's a really pleasant road to drive on.  I had two weeks holiday recently and during that time I noticed my two front tyres needed changing. I've always had Michelin Pilot Sport on all four corners up until now. When I bought the new tyres they said I only needed two and these were fitted to the rear (as recommended by the tyre centre). They are Avon ZV7 and I must admit it's dramatically reduced the road noise. I've noticed they have wider tread gaps for better surface water clearing as well. They were around half the price of Michelin on promotion. The car will be sold within the next 12 months, The two Michelins which still have 3mm of tread were then moved to the front. I have a suspicion that the flashing ESP light may have started from when the tyres were changed. Has anyone else noticed the same ?

I would imagine, as the Avon ZV7 is rated really poorly by the indie testers, that the car's computer is struggling to cope with the very different levels of grip you now have on the car front to back.

Tyres are one of the things where you really do get what you pay for.

I've never had that problem after fitting just two new Tyres and I've had Avon tyres on previous cars and rate them highly.

The first thing I would do is to check that all 4 Tyre Pressures are correct. If so or the problem is still there after adjusting the pressures then finding a quiet off road place and switching the ESP off and having a play around might throw some light on where the problem is if you can do it safely.

If you still think the new/old Tyres are the problem then swapping them from front to back may be worth trying to see if it eliminates the problem.

Son had new michelin sports fitted, the ESP light came on as he cornered hard, on further investigation he found out the tyre fitter had damaged one sensor, must have smashed it with the tyre lever whilst removing/refitting the tyre.
