Oil Change

Featured Replies

Hi Folks

was considering changing the Oil and oil filter on my 2019 focus, 1.0 ecoboost

on a scale of 1 -5 where would this job sit 😁

Halfords says i'll need this grade 5W-20E... how many litres are needed?

is the oil filter easy to get at?

any tips/help appreciated

thanks

That's only part of the story. The Ecoboost 1.0 has a very exact oil specification.

Full details in the Ford owners handbook:

I'd give it a 2.

The oil filter is easy to reach from underneath, right at the front of the engine block.  And it's a conventional screw canister, instead of a messy separate paper element.

Will probably only refill around 4 litres as it won't fully drain, but best to get 5 litres.  Genuine Castrol is available on eBay at around £33 for a 5 litre bottle.

One thing to note is the 1.0 EcoBoost takes a long time for the oil to drain down after running.  So the oil level will appear low immediately after switch off.  Don't be tempted to top it up straight after the first run as these regularly end up overfilled.

thanks, so when you're filling you're not actually going to see the oil top out, you're going purely by how much you've poured in?

would you take it for a drive then check, or is it enough to let it tick over for a while then check

That's correct. Drain the oil fully and replace the filter with new. Refill the engine with exactly 4.3 litre and then run the engine 10 or so minutes. Leave for about 30 minutes and then check oil level and top up as required. It will only take between 0.1 and 0.2 litre to reach the full mark on the dipstick. Be careful not to over fill.

I maybe wrong, but I'm sure I read 4.6 litres. This may include pre-filling the oil filter. Looking at Millers Oil website (oil use) they state this as the capacity:

LubeCap 5,05 litre (Initial fill)
LubeCap 4,6 litre (Service fill)
Filter capacity 0,2 litre

This is for my Fiesta, I can't think why the Focus would not be any different.

I'd also give it 2. Need to jack car right up as very little access from above.

Do not do this job without support stands and make sure you're on level ground.

Not much room for your hands due to cables and pipes so I would recommend a removal tool.

Recheck the level when off the stands.

If you can get the recommended Castrol for £33 as Unofix has said I'd go for that.

I agree, you're wrong 🤣

See my original reply (above) to the OP which is taken from the Focus owners handbook.

I don't mind 🤣

Here is the link to 5 litres of Castrol oil £33.98

Here's the eBay one.  Only a few pence cheaper than AC.
