MK2 1.6 petrol AC is not working (clutch not engaging)

Featured Replies

Hi,

My AC is not working and from what I see, the clutch is not engaging. It could be clutch, but no warranty that the compressor is working too. I see that the new one (compressor) is around 250 quid... How much do you reckon it would cost to replace it?

Have you had the gas level checked?  The compressor will not kick in if the gas level is low.

In answer to the question though, swapping the compressor is fairly simple, maybe £50-£80 in labour.  Then you'll have to pay for a regas at around £60 on top.  Most people buy used compressors due to the high price of brand new ones, though of course you can't tell exactly how much longer a used part will work for.

I bought an Ebay used compressor 4 years ago for £25, has worked perfectly ever since... Like Tom says, very easy to replace (I watched my guy do it!), took about 35 minutes.

they don't have a clutch on variable rate compressors,  gas level ?

As long as it’s not the AC evaporator that’s gone/leaked, it shouldn’t be too expensive. You’d be better off selling it and buying another if it is though cus you have remove the whole front inside of the car to replace that!
