2016 focus 1.5 tdci powershift poor returning 41mpg

Featured Replies

Hi,

My focus estate is 66 plate 1.5 tdci zetec, according to the car computer it think it is only doing 42mpg , filled the car until first click drove it 377 miles filled again and it took 41.4 liter of diesel.

Things I done so far to improve mpg but no luck

. Changed engine and auto gearbox oil and filters.

. New air and diesel filter.

. Checked all 4 tyres pressure

. Cleaned the air mass sensor

Is there anything else I can try?

Thanks

How long are most of your journeys?

30 to 45 minutes some on a and b routes majority 60 and 70 mph on thr A1

That's an average of 40.5 mpg, the estate body should hinder a bit and being heavily loaded, but the powershift should improve MPG over a manual.

My manual 1.5 TDCi 2016 hatch used to average 59 MPG

You may not be doing enough long trips to get the DPF to fully regen.

Regeneration uses loads of fuel as it sends unburnt fuel into the DPF to burn the soot away.

Try and plan a long journey on a motorway where you can keep a consistent speed.

The car needs to be at full operating temperature for at least 10 minutes, so about 20 minutes into the journey

You could tell on mine when it had gone into regen mode as it would sound a bit rough and slightly louder and when you stopped the fans would be on fast and the engine idle slightly raised from normal.

I understand that neutral is a bit of and art whilst driving a powershift so try this procedure.

Once you feel the engine note change go into "S" mode on the gear lever and then into manual mode so that it will hold the gears.

Maintain a legal speed consistent with the flow of traffic but hold the car in a gear that will hold the revs at 3,800 RPM

Now just drive for about 10 minutes, at 3,800 RPM but every couple of minutes full throttle the car up to the red line/rev limiter and hold it there for about 5 seconds, don't hit the kick down point on the throttle or you will start changing down, just go to the full spot. Your transmission may hold on the limiter, it may not, if it doesn't, don't worry, just carry on holding the revs at 3,800 RPM. Revving just helps the DPF soot come out of the system better.

After 10 minutes the regen process should be fully complete. Now check your fuel economy again

This spec of Diesel is Euro 6 but no Adblue and they go into regen mode about every 1,000 miles if used correctly

It's very important to change the engine oil regularly, the transmission is a wet clutch so best to change every 30-40,000 miles and keep the air cleaner clean, they get dirty quick on the diesels
