noise coming from engine when idle after cambelt n waterpump

Featured Replies

Hi all

i had my cambelt and waterpump replaced a couple weeks ago now but even since I got my car back I noticed a weird noise coming from the engine ever since kind of sounds like a bogging type noise I took it back to the garage but he said he couldn’t hear anything.

If you listen to the video attached you can hear a noise in the background of my engine running.
just wondering if anyone else has experienced something similar or know what it is just by hearing

all replied will be appreciated

What engine is fitted?

I can hear a background “knocking”, does the heater work ok, I’m wondering if it’s an airlock in the coolant.

Are all pipes etc clipped in place and secure?

A video in daylight would help 🙂

I can't open the video.  Does it only work on Apple devices?

It’s a 1.25 engine and yeah the car runs sound I’m guessing by heater you mean the air con that works apart from it needs re gassing.

I’ve have a look under the car to see if anything could be loose but can’t seem to see anything.

and it could be a airlock in the coolant to be fair just not 100% sure

check your reg number https://www.motul.com/gb/en/lubricants

Looks like the water pump isn't running straight there.

Are you sure the pump was changed?

Sounds like the cambelt may be to tight.

i would take it back to who ever did it and tell them your not happy with it

it could be one of the pulleys the belt spins around on.

Sounds like a pulley

Check the water pump pulley bolts are done up. Have a look when it is running and see if there is any wobble on the waterpump pulley or indeed any other pulley; there should be no sideways movement seen when looking at the belt.

i had took it back to the original mechanic that did the cam belt + water pump and auxiliary belt I shown him the noise that is happening he wasn’t too sure at first so he stripped it all down and couldn’t see anything wrong so he told me

but he did say when building it back up the noise only occurred once he put the timing cover back on when he left it off the noise had disappeared which he said is weird and he’s not sure on why it’s doing that and left it as that.

he told me he can guarantee it’s 100% safe to drive but I think it could be at that either the tensioner is gone or the belts slack I mean I’m not mechanic but the noise definitely isn’t good lol

I take it he didn't give you that guarantee in writing?

I have heard belts rubbing on the cover before when they're not lined up perfectly.

I hope its not this problem in the linked video where the crankshaft sprocket sides come away due to tiny spot welds failing; then the timing belt drifts towards the cover and rubs:

Do you think this noise would get louder with higher rpm as when I rev above 1500 the noise goes away but anywhere from idle up to that you can hear it

It could do either. If it is rubbing the timing cover then after a few trips it should be possible to take the cover off and see where it is rubbing but its a bit of an ordeal getting the cover completely off. If you can undo the bolts at the top of the cover, you might be able to pull the cover back enough to see if the belt sits centrally on the cam pulleys or is right on the edge. If it is a slight rub with nothing else wrong then it should go away within a few journeys; if it keeps up at the same level of noise then something is not right.
