How to tell if my 1.8 Duratec is Flexifuel?

Featured Replies

Hello folks!

I have a Focus Mk2 1.8 Duratec, I'm looking to change the oil. I understand that the type of oil used will depend on if the engine is "FlexiFuel" or not.

How can I tell? I've looked in the manual and it doesn't actually specify.

Thanks in advance!

I can't remember what flexi-fuel was now?

I thought it was LPG????

Something to do with coping with higher ethanol fuels. (E85)

If it's FlexFuel it'll have an E85 on or near the filler cap.  Very unlikely to be in UK.

Does that mean we actually have a Ford that runs on E10 then?

Most vehicles will run on it, just depends for how long you want it to run on it!!

Not sure if vehicle manufactures have changed the formula for their seals within their engines, but most people i deal with always say E85 vehicles tend to get through seals at an accelerated rate and if left standing the fuel will absorb water and rust tanks etc.

Let's hope it doesn't rust tanks on fords as pretty much every model been plastic for years. 🤣

The 1.8 Duratec HE Flexifuel Focus MK2/MK2.5 can easily be distinguished from the "normal' 1.8 Duratec HE.

The Flexifuel has an electric engine heater fitted as standard. This electric engine heater consists of an electric heating element in the cooling system and a connector in the front grille (which can hardly be missed). The system is powered using a special (supplied) cable that connects the connector in the front grill to a 240 Volt main socket.

The electric engine heater is necessary for cold starts at cold ambient temperatures when using E85. Otherwise the engine will simply not start. Therefore this system has less use in warmer climates on which the cable is often not even included.

A major downside of the 1.8 Duratec HE Flexifuel are the reduced service intervals. The PCM cannot detect whether the fuel tank is filled with petrol, E85 or a mix of both. Therefore the PCM injects extra fuel to make sure the engine fires no matter what fuel is used. To prevent excessive amounts of unburnt fuel inside the engine oil reduced service intervals are required.
