Clunk when changing gears and releasing clutch

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Apologies for the long post.

I have a 2019 model focus st line X, I'm honestly at the end of my tether here with it/the dealership.. bought the car 6th of May, 37,909 miles on it, noticed a noise when idling, then a thud started when starting the car, this turned out to be a worn gear box mount which is common apparently (according to dealer mechanic) soo that gets booked in and fixed however with the length of time it took and me driving it, it got quite bad - the engine started to literally 'jump', then when on a hill at the biting point the clutch started making a whining noise (they said thus was caused by the worn mount). I also got new pads and discs when it was in getting the worn mount fixed. Monday when I collected the car and there was a horrible noise coming from the front drivers wheel area, so took it back this morning , the heat shield was touching the back of the disc (something like that he said), however when driving home from this visit today I could hear a noise when changing gear so took it back, they put it on the ramp and checked the gearbox mount, said that was fine and the mechanic came a drive with me and said nothings wrong and this is normal for ford's 😂 I had a focus active courtesy car when they were fixing mines and it never made that noise, I've drove multiple ford ka+ at work and none had this noise, it's a clunk when changing gear and bringing the clutch back up. I'm not trained and honestly not clued up so can't break down what's making the noise exactly.

Point is, IS THIS NORMAL ????

Thanks so much for any help in advance, I'm going insane with this 😂

Luckily mine doesn't make that noise, so would say not normal, I'm no mechanic so can't help with the possible cause.

Could be an Engine mount.

I have a video but i dont yhino im able to upload it, it showed how much the engine was rocking before which they put down to the Gearbox mount being worn, the engine now after having to that replaced is much better and I don't have a the thud when starting the car. I don't even know what to do now they're telling me the clutch clunk is normal but it just doesn't sit right with me 😂

If you want to upload a video it needs to be through a third party site, such as YouTube, then linked here.

Though I'm not sure a video of the old problem will be useful for the new one.  I would agree that driving with the knackered gearbox mount has prematurely worn one of the others.

Though having said that, I often found Ford engine mounts to be a bit 'weak' compared to VAG cars, they generally do allow some engine movement under gearchanges and while idling.
