Brake grind only in one place

Featured Replies

Hi all got a 15 plate focus and noticed a grinding noise from the front left brake.

I had a look yesterday ruled out the dust guard catching as it only makes the noise at 1 place.

I have spun the disc and like I say it only really catches bad at one point obviously they do touch all the time but like it's trying to dig in more my mind says warped disc as if it's wheel bearing it would do it constantly any ideas or tips cheers

I suspect, as you say, it is a warped disc. However, it's also possible that the pads are simply catching at the point of maximum runout of the disc because the caliper is starting to seize.

Rather than immediately replace the discs (always replace them as a pair), I would dis-assemble the caliper and pads and check that everything moves freely.

Suspect warped disc.

One pad wears more than the other so it may be closer on the inboard pad.

I will look again how do you check the caliper is free working correctly

SImilar to Focus. Your pads look ok so shouldn't need to actually replace them.

I had this effect once on a Proton Wira that I owned years ago. The reason was that the disc was at the end of it's life and the layer exposed by wear appeared to have a different grain pattern to the previous upper surface (visible on spinning the disc illuminated with a torch). This caused a "wobbling" effect on braking, which went away after replacing the disc.
