Noise at idle after driving

Featured Replies

I have a 2012 focus zetec s petrol. After a drive for a short while i can hear what sounds like helicopter blades spinning and seems to be coming from the right of the engine under the air box pipe. Anyone know what it could be ? Engine is a 1.6 ecoboost

Radiator fan?

Don't touch it.  It can power up at any time, even with the ignition off.  Will be difficult to post the result on here with no fingers.

Directly under the airbox is the gearbox & clutch.  The dual mass flywheel can make a heavy rattling noise at idle which I suppose could be considered similar to a helicopter.  That's not a cheap or easy fix if that is starting to fail though.

I was hoping this wouldnt be the problem as i also get a clunking when shifting into gear. I can coast but if i change gear while doing so ther eis a clunk and then a clunk when i lift the clutch up. I thought this would be gear box mount though

Hmm, difficult to say without seeing it.

If the gearbox mount is that saggy, it may be allowing two parts to touch that shouldn't (exhaust and chassis for example) which would cause a rattling noise as the engine shakes at idle.  The rubber in the mount will be softer when warm.

But the DMF can also clunk when changing gear.  If the clunk occurs while the clutch is down and moving the gearstick, then that has to be movement in the mount.  But if the clunk only appears when you lift up the clutch (so not moving the gearstick) then that's more likely to be play in the DMF.

sounding like its the tranny mount. Is there only one which is on top of the transmission?

It does also make a noise inside the cabin but that would be the input shaft bearing. This goes once warmed up so its not the same noise as the helicopter noise which i experience after driving

There is technically only one 'mount' on top of the gearbox.  But there's also a roll restrictor underneath at the back of the gearbox.  That one doesn't take any load, just stops the engine rocking back and forwards.  I'd probably change both together.
