You can't drive it in the winter either.  The heated screens and aux heater won't work with low voltage.

It sounds like you are using the controls correctly.  So likely to be an actual fault with the AC, perhaps not enough gas filled at the factory, or a faulty part fitted.

thanks for that tom, could not think of anything else to do

latest update air con problems.took to ford garage on wed 19 july 8-15 am.got phone call at 4.0 pm to say nearly flat battery causing proplem.never had trouble with battery.told car battery showing 70% charge, but only showing 29% in car.dont know what this means.told wanted new air con modual, this orded should arrive 19 july.phone call at 3.0 pm,modual arrived, been fitted and taking for test drive.phone call 4-0 pm car ready.asked for note explaining what work been done.i will try by best to write this, but lot of words not readable, will put ? against these.

carried out vhc tuclee?  carried out investigated ac poor connect ids fellaw? sbd operation a 1927368.inspected ac system pressures ok.fuse ok.carried out update huac modual fault still present.checked data logger onfldrs? found.battery soc to low for ac pid? active?

can some one please give a clear explanation of exactly what i have had done.would the low battery reading of 29% have given me any more problems.could it have affected my petrol consummation which i think is low compared to other users of this site,i get 45 fill to fill.fiesta active x 2023.thanks for your anticipated clear replies

VHC is vehicle health check - just a basic safety check of tyres etc before starting work.

Connect IDS means plugging in the Ford diagnostic tool to scan the modules.

AC pressure tested ok means there was plenty of AC gas in the system, confirming no physical leak.  (So I was wrong there!)

Fuse ok.

Update HVAC module means installing a software update through IDS.  Error still present after update, fault must be elsewhere.  (HVAC is heating, ventilation and air conditioning).

Data logger is a live data graph on IDS.  Each PID is a different parameter on the graph.

Battery SOC PID showing too low on graph, preventing AC switch on.  (SOC is state of charge).  Fault has been found.

Very low SOC does cause other problems.  Stop start won't work.  Keyless entry won't work.  FordPass app may not connect to the car.  Fuel economy could be altered, although 45mpg average is about right for these.

@unofix should be along soon with a lovely little graphic to explain, 'state of charge'.....

State of charge is the level of battery power between 'full' and 'flat'.  (Will await Unofix's battery chart picture.)

The car battery monitoring system (BMS) should be reading very close to the actual battery reading.  The reading should be above 60% ideally.

I don't know why it would be so different on a brand new car.  It's possible that the battery went flat while waiting in the dealership compound, and then someone at the dealership charged the battery using the battery terminals, instead of using the negative post on the chassis.  This would have the effect of charging the battery, but the BMS would not know the battery had been charged.

The fix would be to fully charge the battery, and then reset the BMS.  Hopefully now both the battery and the car show the same level.

Didn't want to disappoint you all, so here it is...... 🤣

Tested the battery under the bonnet today,it was 12.33 volts, which orcording to unofix chart is at 70% charge.the ford garage said the charge inside the car was only 29%,the reason the air con and possible other problems were present.the air con would not blow very cold,i do not know what this has been set at.can you tell me where i can check this second figure that was 29% so i can check what figure it is at now.thanks to all

You would need a diagnostic tool to plug into the OBD port to read the cars perceived voltage.

  • Author

Thanks Tom,but i am afraid my technical knowledge does not run to diagnostic tool or obd port.just hoping there was somewhere to put my multimeter on.what would i ask the ford garage who did the job for this reading.ask them what the perceived voltage at the OBD port was reading when they completed the job

turbocat

There is nowhere to put a multimeter as it's not a real voltage.  It's just what the car thinks the voltage is.

You can ask the Ford garage was the 'state of charge' PID was reading on IDS after the repair, though I doubt they'll tell you, they probably didn't record it anywhere.

How does a dealer not want to look at the issue with a car under it's first year of warranty?

I realise that, but are they not contractually obligated in some way?

Not unless it's a safety recall.

I doubt they've told the customer 'no' directly.

My guess would be they've said it's down to driving style or quoted a ridiculously long wait time to book it in.

Who told you that? In 2003 the EU introduced legislation that stopped the old practice that you must go back to the dealer to get your car repaired, as long as the one you go to uses genuine manufacturer parts to maintain the warranty. Even though no longer in the EU, legislation still stands...

I did not have to take it back but they told me that was the best option otherwise I could face a diagnostic charge and a possible chartge if it needed re-gassing

On such a new car you'd have to be dreadfully unlucky to have a leak in the A/C system, we have a car in the family now over 20 years old that the A.C is still icy cold and hasn't been touched since it left the factory, though it is a Toyota.

If it were me, I'd book it in for a recharge to somewhere like KwikFit. Before they fill it, they do a test to see if there is a leak (they won't be able to fix it, but if it's large enough for their diagnostic machine to pick up, at least you know what you're dealing with). If they do fill it, and it doesn't reduce the temperature by a predetermined amount, you get a full refund so you won't be out of pocket...

At the time of me taking it into a dealer to look at they could not get the air con to work, that is why I have booked a diagnostic test but aftert a couple of days it blasted out freezing cold air. That stopped and when on climat control it just got hotter until I had to turn it off. Treied it again and it worked as it should. I contacted Fords and told them that surely the diagnostic would not pick up a fault  when it is working properly only if it was a permanente fault and I was concerned that evn when they could not get it to work and now it does intermittently     will I be liable for another diagnostic until the fault is there all the time. They have told me that they will call me the day afterr the test and will get in touch with the dealer beforhand and that they would take control if nothing shows up. Hopefully it will get sorted soon.
