Intermittent Injector problems (Fiesta diesel)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

2010 1.4 tdci fiesta 120k miles.

Fault and limp mode happened on Mway. AA eventually come to rescue me and the lights gone and car running fine so off I pop.

Fast forward a month and it happends again, however i have my OBD on me and find a fault on injector 4.

I was due to service the car anyway so decided to do the glow plugs and while I'm in town take a little look at the injectors.

Get them out and they are realllllly gunked up but when I whack them on a little electrical tester they are firing fine and all producing nice clicks.

So I clean them up, give the wiring a look and put it all back together. Boom... I'm running smoother and getting some MAJOR improvement on fuel economy. I think that must have been the issue.

Fast forward another few months and it's happened again, same fault same injector. When you clear the fault the car goes right back to running normally for whatever random period of time until it happens again, you can literally clear the fault code as soon as it happens and the car seems to be fine.

This made me think it MUST be wiring? The fault code is p1204 cylinder 4 injector circuit open/shorted which also sounds to be wiring, so I had the airbox off and got the car running with no fault and started jiggling and messing with all the wiring hoping to trigger it...Nada... I inspected all the wiring again and could still see no issues, no loose connections, nothing. Regardless I have everything a clean with contact cleaner and did it all back up.

It's been another 2 months and its happened again. I'm at a loss! Could it be the actual injector? I really want to sell this car but can't in good conscience knowing this issue is unresolved. Any ideas?

Other bits of info, the car does run a little rogher when the AC is on, however this has happened with the AC turned off.

At higher speeds sometimes the revs fluctuate when you're between 2.5k - 3k rev range, if you hold the revs in this range while fluctuating I have managed to trigger the fault however most of the time it feels a little like the turbo just comes to life and the car suddenly gets a bit of power and it powers on through.

Really hoping somone can offer some advice?

When was the last time it had a fuel filter change?

I had very similar about 5 months ago..used some fuel/injector cleaner from halfrauds called Dipetane..

Sold on fleebay aswell.

It's what you get in stp/redex..but in ther bottles you get such a small amount it would cost a lot of money to clean the injectors..

A 1 litre bottle will do from memory 200 litres of fuel..

If you search on YouTube and it will explain all about it.

I use it every time I fill..more mpg and smoother running for me..done nearly 200k on a 1.6d mk7

Heyup,

I did a full service when I took the injectors out and cleaned em so gave it a new fuel filter then.

I'vegiven in and bought a reconditioned injector, going to whack that in and program I'm this afternoon and see what happens, think I will grab some of that stuff though!
