Fuel cap... not

Featured Replies

I'm just getting to grips with the peculiarities of the new model (16) Fiesta compared to my old one (57) about which I could start writing a book if it would not be so out of date by now. When I went to refuel for the first time, was a bit shocked to discover the lack of a fuel cap, not to mention the lack of a lock. What am I missing here? Maybe I am a bit paranoid but what is stopping anybody from either stealing or contamination your fuel? Or even the fuel getting contaminated accidentally? There seems to be a fair bit of grime around the opening and as far as I can tell, not much to prevent debris getting in. I looked on eBay to see if there was an aftermarket cap I could just put over the inner orifice but found nothing. I'm probably going to have to improvise something for peace of mind.

Nothing. The Ford easy fuel system has been in common use on all models since around 2010.

No need to write a book about your new car, Ford have already done it for you.

Perhaps you could modify a Mr. Bean door lock and fit it on the fuel filler 🤣

I THINK there is some sort of slotted barrier to stop people putting a tube down and siphoning, but you are right about contamination. Or are you? You can't just push that flap in with a screwdriver. I'm a mind-reader and I know you haven't tried that yourself yet. I can also predict the future - you're going to try and do that right now.

For my next trick I will now answer your next question that you haven't asked yet!

Ans:  you need a fuel filler adaptor (looks like a she-wee) which was originally supplied with your car and should be in the spare wheel well.

I meant a book about the weird stuff which is taking some getting used to.

Unfortunately, the manual doesn't cover a lot of it or if it does, it reads like it has been translated into a foreign language and then translated back into American English; hood, tire etc.

I actually tried with my finger.

She-wee? That was another thing, no spare wheel and there was no she-wee with the inflator/sealant kit (the sealant was empty). I just took it all out and put a spare wheel in (I have the set of alloys from my old Fiesta) as well as a jack, socket and wrench. I then discovered the caps on the wheel nuts! I couldn't get them off or get a 19mm socket on them or any other size to fit properly so they are coming off somehow and I just ordered a set of proper nuts. The only ones to remove easily were, ironically, the locking nuts.

They're only supplied with the tyre inflator & sealant OR a spare wheel as standard.

Worth checking the glovebox, centre console, seat pockets and even underneath the front seats for the she-wee.  But if it really is missing, this is the correct one.  They are different for petrol and diesel nozzles.  Might be slightly cheaper at your local Ford dealer parts counter.

The wheel nuts are 19mm including the caps, but known to swell over time.  The caps aren't designed to be removed.

Thanks for the information.

I used to have a Land Rover Discovery with wheel nut caps which seemed to be designed to be removed (they just slid off using fingers) but I may be wrong. I've only tried to remove a nut from one wheel of the Fiesta and I needed to use a mallet to get a socket on two of them (most of the others turn slightly on the nuts) - not the sort of thing I want to be having to do when I put winter wheels/tyres on or, indeed, changing a wheel at the road side.

Some cars come with removable caps.  But Ford caps are mechanically pressed on during manufacture.  You'll never remove these with your fingers.  When you do get them off, you'll need an 18mm socket to remove the nut.

Should be the newer type 'global' nuts on a 2016 model.  These have a slightly larger bulge on top.  Not to be confused with the older nuts which are flatter on top.  The wheel nut seats are shaped slightly differently so shouldn't be mixed up.

I don't think there is any getting the caps off - I have tried with pliers and none would come off. I'm just going to have to brute force them one way or another, nut and cap together. As I mentioned, I managed to get one off once I had got the socket on but didn't try them all. I've ordered plain nuts to replace them.

By the way, no she-wee in sight and my girlfriend has a similar age petrol Fiesta and she said she hasn't seen one in hers. The back of her car is a bit full for a casual rummage but I will check when I get the chance. I keep spare diesel for emergencies (remote location) so it would be a bit awkward not to be able to get it in the car.

The usual way to remove the caps is to hammer something thin but strong through the centre of the cap, then rip it open.  My preference is just to hammer a larger socket on, less destructive and less chance of alloy damage.

If your girlfriend's Fiesta also has EasyFuel and needs a petrol funnel, this is the link for those.  Genuine Ford Kuga Focus Fiesta Puma 1.5 Dragon Petrol Fuel Filler Funnel 2050716 | eBay

As I said earlier, I helped the socket on with some mighty whacks with a mallet. Anyway, the new sockets arrived and all but the locking nuts have been swapped.

I discovered that only the first wheel I checked (passenger side front) had particularly badly damaged caps so given the lack of sealant in the wheel kit, I'm guessing that that was the tyre which needed sorting out.

Anyway, I feel better for replacing the nuts with 'whole nuts' and have quite a few spares - the eight remaining from the 20 I bought and the nine from the car which weren't wrecked.

On to replacing the TPMSs...

The sensor was probably wrecked by the emergency sealant inside the tyre.  Not the most effective solution...

Yes, I didn't think of that even though I read about it somewhere. Duh! I don't know how to get specific information about which tyre's sensor is defective so maybe I might have twigged if I'd known but I'm just getting a sensor not detected message. I'm only six days on the learning curve.

I'm going to start by installing sensors in my spare wheels so if I mess up, it isn't  too big a deal. I've seen a few methods of breaking the bead but I am going to have to improvise with aspects of each, I think.
