2016 Focus 1.0L rough idle and stalling

Featured Replies

Hello. I am new here but I have a 2016 focus with the 1.0l ecoboost with 127,000 miles.

Today the car started idling extremely rough but allowed me to get it the 4 miles back home and only presented a slight amount of surging and stuttering while in gear and driving. Once home and in the driveway the motor started shaking violently and the rpms were going wild (250-1250 rpms based on tachometer). I then shut the car down and began looking it over. The coolant reservoir was almost empty, I topped it off and started the car back up and it idled fine for approx a minute before idling rough again. I let the car sit for a couple of hours and it started up fine and began idling rough again approx a minute later and began almost stalling again. I cut the car off and let it sit a minute then tried to restart it and the motor would turn but would not crank. The coolant reservoir dropped to about 1/2 full.

I did notice a small amount of white smoke coming from the exhaust while the car was idling after topping off the reservoir.

The car has been slowing burning coolant for approximately the last year (top off 2-3 times in between oil changes).

I am at a loss on what the issue could be as the car is presenting like it has a vacuum leak one minute then presents like it is being starved for fuel another minute. I believe the seals in the turbo may be going bad based on my experience with other turbo cars from other brands but I'm not sure if the coolant burning could be related to the stalling and surging that has started today. The car is also not throwing any codes and no check engine light.

Any ideas or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

The engine has come to the end of it's life 🙁

It's truly amazing that you got 127,000 Miles out of a 1.0 Ecoboost.

I'm really hoping that isn't the case, the car has run great up to this point with only regular maintenance and a thermostat housing failing.

Has the belt been done?

Sounds like it's jumped a tooth

I think the coolant loss is the significant factor. Could it be a cracked head?

On my car the coolant loss was minimal to start with but over the last two years the crack in the head kept propagating and the coolant loss became progressively worse.

Symptoms were obviously increasing loss of coolant, but also poor starting, refusing to start, running rough, poor idling, to eventually filling up the exhaust manifold and cylinders!

Nobody suspected the head cracking, believing there to be either a leaking radiator or head gasket. It is however a known issue.

I've had the opportunity to dive a little deeper into the car and it looks like a crack in the head is what the issue is.

Thanks everybody for the help

Did you fix it?

So there was a leak and the engine was burning the coolant.

What is the average life span of a 1.0 focus?

How long is a piece of string ?

It depends on how the vehicle is used, how it is driven, and how it is serviced. In the USA many make it to around 200,000 miles since they are driven on long straight highways at a steady constant speed. In the UK most are used on short stop and start journeys and only make it to around 100,000 miles. There are just too many factors that can effect the life of the 1.0 Ecoboom engine to be able to give an accurate estimate of the life span.

100000 miles are not enough/too few. Perhaps fiesta could endure more since it weights less.
