With the governments history of online security and leaving laptops laying about i think i'll pass.

Looks interesting.  Though will be another government service I can't access having never owned a passport.

me neither tho i didnt get that far. Gov seems to be cracking down on non nationals. Whats the point in removing nationality if you still gonna leave them here " waaaaaay off topic i know"

Big brother at it again.

mmm... wouldn't mind signing up for that, BUT:

"It does not extend to Northern Ireland.."

Guess it's because you guys accidentally left us behind as part of the EU 🤣

Aren’t a lot of your car and driving rules different. Even pre Brexit?

Not really, there are some differences, like MOTs being carried out by government centers rather than licensed garages, but documentation like V5s, driving licenses etc are broadly the same. As for 'driving rules', I'm not aware of any differences to GB.

Sorry I meant driver’s licences rather than road rules. I thought there were different agencies and slightly different requirements.

Scotland has different agencies for things though too (in a more general sense). A lot of stuff touted as “UK” is just England & Wales with a different system for Scotland and NI because of devolution or historic separate legal systems etc.

Be nice if they waited for each part to all be ready with UK wide systems for things. But then I guess if they waited for each other it would never happen!

Tin hats at the ready!

They’re only letting you see information they already hold on you in a single place.

I fear you misunderstand, 'Big Brother'. The concept was realised during lockdown when government urged you to grass on your neighbours if they had 5 people in their back garden instead of 4. Or if you had the audacity to go out in public without a face mask, or demanded that cafes took your contact details for daring to come in to them for a cup of coffee.

Letting you see information they already have on you, as already stated, isn't, 'Big Brother'...

I failed to get a VED reminder that was due by the end of July. I wonder if that was due to this change or if it just got lost in our not-fit-for-purpose postal system.

I keep a reminder on my PC so it didn't bother me. I'm in two minds whether to create an account with DVLA.

Same here...never got a reminder for the tax, even though the V5 is in my name...never happened before :confused1:

(I've got the Vehicle Smart app on my phone which lets me check on such things, fortunately 👍

DVLA are having massive backlogs for some processes.  Postal road tax is currently taking about 8 weeks to process!

I'd assume the reminders are all done by computer, so shouldn't be affected, but I wouldn't be surprised of you get the reminders in a few weeks time.

Postal road tax????  I honestly can't remember the last time I posted off a cheque to pay for road tax. I haven't even got a cheque book any more , last book was 2006 . 🤣🤣

Ok, I'm a liar, I found a cheque book and the issue date was 2010.  On cheque number 3.

You would think the DVLA would be clever enough to also incorporate sending out reminders when your driving licence needs renewing. Difficult to remember every 10 years for photo licence, even more so after 70 when it's every 3 years!

I didn't want to trigger any jealousy on here.   Some people can get 50% reduction for car tax due to disability.

However, this process can ONLY be completed by posting several documents and a cheque to the DVLA.  It cannot be completed online.  And it cannot be completed at a post office.  And it only lasts for one tax period.  So you have to go through the same postal process every year!  It's almost as if they've made it purposely difficult to access... 🤔

(The alternative is to pay the full amount online, and then post all the documents to receive a 50% refund cheque from the DVLA many weeks later.  That is what they currently recommend due to the backlogs).

Meanwhile they bank the payment and get interest on it. Many of these governement "agencies" seem to be becoming rip-off merchants.

As I've said elswhere they see this as their raison d'être.
