Does the MK2.5 Focus 2.0 TDCi have a DPF or cDPF?

Featured Replies

Hi all.

My 2005 1.8 TDCi Focus is really starting to show it's age (DMF rattling like a mother and I suspect the injectors are getting ready for replacement due to old age), given the current crazy inflation of used car prices, if I have to replace my car I'm currently leaning towards a less expensive mid-term solution instead of my original plan of a MK4.5 Mondeo Titanium X Sport and aiming to keep it for as long as I've had my current car.

To that end, a MK2.5 2.0 TDCi seems like a decent shout if I can find one that isn't too rusty (I can drop my current car's half leather interior and Xtrons head unit into it, so not overly worried about trim level etc). My questions relate to DPFs, given the 1st generation system was the cause of many of headache, does anyone have definite answers to the following questions?

1. I've seen the odd post where people have said they had a facelift 2.0 TDCi that wasn't equipped with a DPF. Assuming this is a possibility, does anyone know if there's a quick and easy way to visually check i.e. something I can ask a dealer to do as part of a pre-sale email enquiry (and that even a moron couldn't get wrong)

2. For the DPF equipped 2.0 TDCis, did any of the facelift cars get the cDPF like the MK4.5 Mondeo with the same engine or did they continue to only be equipped with the notorious 1st generation DPF system with the fluid reservoir?

Also, apologies for not being around much of late. A promotion at work resulted in a nice salary bump but a big increase in workload, so a few things have had to take a back seat to work commitments.

1.  I'm yet to find a salesman that knows anything about mechanics.  It's very easy to see under the car whether it has a torpedo shaped DPF with thin pressure pipes alongside it, or whether it just has a 'Pringles can' cylindrical mid-box with flat ends.  I wouldn't trust a salesman to tell you which it has, I'd ask them to provide a picture or video.  You can also tell by the DPF pressure sensor on the battery box if an engine bay picture is provided.

2. Yes, some have a cDPF.  I'm not sure of the changeover date on the 2.0, it was around 2009 on 1.6 TDCI.  In the old days, ETIS would tell you whether it had a DPF, cDPF or neither.  But that's no longer accessible.  7zap still offers this function with a VIN input, though may not be as reliable as ETIS.

(Alternatively, feel free to send me the reg of any you're interested in and I'll check lol)

1. I can't disagree with you there.

2. Have you got access to the ETIS replacement then?

Sadly not.  I'd use the 7zap method if you haven't got the time to do it yourself.

Ah, understood. Thanks for the offer but I'd never be so lazy as to get someone to do something that I could easily do myself. 7zap has proved useful for me on a number of occasions in the past. TBH, at the moment I'm very much just at the research stage, just in case the worst happens and I suddenly need to replace my old tank.

As an alternative to 7zap

Interesting to use as a backup parts catalogue.  Though I've just checked two of my old VINs and it couldn't pull the emissions data (DPF type) for either of them.

It has it's pluses and minuses. I came across it when 7zap seemed to keep going offline for days at a time although it seems to have returned to normal.

ETIS is a big miss for full information and of course none of the sites like 7zap have any of the newer vehicles making things even more difficult.

Absolutely!

7zap does show the minor spec list now with a VIN input.  It's on the left hand side at the bottom.  Have to scroll down on some devices.  I only noticed it recently myself.  As you say though, it only works for VIN's up to around 2016.
