OBD fuse removal a security risk or a good idea?

Featured Replies

                   Hello,

It looks like my next Ford will probably be one with keyless start (not keyless entry)  and so have been looking at all the precautions owners have taken on the forums here regarding keyless start and many people suggest removing the OBD fuse(datalink). Sounds like a sensible thing to do but I was wondering if doing this will render the security feature built into the OBD null and void.  Namely, the feature Ford have said " If criminals reach the OBD port, any attempt to plug into the car’s diagnostics automatically initiates a 10-minute software lockdown, while the alarm continues to sound. Repeated attempts to access the system restarts the 10-minute wait period, eliminating the possibility of rapid illegitimate programming of keys for the car via the OBD"  Think I also saw setting the alarm off will also activate this.      Any thoughts on this greatly received.  Thanks.

Hello , saw the quote from I think his name is Simon Hurr connected to Ford Europe on security. Quote was in an interview talking about sleepy keys. There is an article on Furrows Ford and certainly quoted on other sites. Some YouTube comments suggest removing the fuse knocks out the security feature so best to check with first hand users here. Looking at 2023 Fiestas.

Do what I did. Get it fitted with a Ghost II immobiliser.

Well I've read quite a number of articles from Simon Hurr (don't think he is actually a Ford employee). I've read the bits about the 'sleepy keyfobs' which is quite commonly known about these days, but I can find no information about this Ford OBD port security feature.

Do you know about it @iantt ?

Nope. The 10 min wait with alarm going off is standard if you open the door with no authorised key fob. We program keys when there lost and we open the door with new key then there's a 600 second delay before we can program a new key.

If the fuse had been taken out to stop the port being used does this 600 second feature still kick in and if not is it then susceptible to self powered key cloning kits.
