Halfords own-brand motor oil for Ecoboost engine

Featured Replies

Next month the first two-year "service" of my Trend Ecoboost falls due. I'm not keen on using the dealer who sold it to me (though am aware of the advantages of doing so in the event of a warranty claim). Previously I've used a Halfords centre within walking distance of my house with complete satisfaction and am minded to do so again. It uses its own-brand Ford Eco oil  "specially formulated for the New Ford Focus Eco Boost engine". Certifications & Standards: ACEA A1/B1 AND API-SN; FORD MC2-948-B.

Would anyone have reservations about using this?

I would be very wary of not having it serviced by a Ford dealer while still under warranty. If something later went wrong with the car it would be all too easy for Ford to argue that non Ford oil had been used. Even if you don't like the existing dealer they couldn't invoke a fault being 'caused' by an idependent garage.  Isn't there some sort of 'law' that it's OK for an independent to service a car, while still under warranty, as long as they use genuine manufacturer's parts? Could you not find a different Ford dealer for this service?

Your just lighting the fuse on a time bomb  boom not using a Ford dealer while under warranty.

Any problem with the engine no matter how small in the future, and Ford will always say it's because it wasn't serviced by us.

Much as I hate that, I agree. One of the very few things the EU did for us is to rid us of the closed shop for manufacture servicing, allowing other garages to legitimately service a non franchise car. However, in this instance, I too would stick to Ford as there is so much history on this particular engine, and it will also maintain future resell value...

Any garage can service any car by law and will not void warranty provided O.E spec or O.E equivelant parts are used.  STICK with Castrol Magnatec 5w20 stop start Oil and genuine Motorcraft Oil filter.

🤔

The title of the thread is:

The OP wants to know if this will be OK.

Telling him that anyone can service it but use ,,,,,,,,,

Halfords don't use Ford parts like Motorcraft, and they use their own oil.

I seem to recall Terence intending to use Halfords for a 12 month oil change, so it's probably had some Halfords oil already.......

Quite so. However, I can't recall seeing a wet belt failure under warranty reported on here? Most we have seen appear to occur from about 4/5 years and 60k, and the owner is then looking for an out of warranty "goodwill" contribution.

Most manufacturers would be inclined to look more favourably on cases where there is a full, provable history within their own network.

As I said Uno without starting an argument my response in using castrol and genuine filts was the answer. As in steer clear from other brands  recommended  regardless of specifications and fyi Halfords autocentres can use Castrol, Mobil1 Mpm and various other oils if requested  just tend not to use genuine filters unless asked specifically for.

Oh dear, our very own @unofix has been reduced to this LOL

🤣

Technically you can use any make of oil, as long as it has the same viscosity and meets the correct specification.

However I would stick to premium brands (Castrol, Mobil, Millers, etc), especially if car is under warranty, as they may have better additives to clean and protect the engine. When my car was serviced by a ford dealer, it had Shell Helix oil on the Invoice, not Castrol which I was surprised at. I now use Millers oils as we've used their oils in our cars for 30 odd years.
