Looking for some Insight for my Focus 2014 Audio Unit

Featured Replies

So I bought my Focus last year around November time and I've been having some thoughts on the audio system. There is a phone and aux button on the unit but pressing phone just shows "Audio Mute" and there isn't an aux connection anywhere.

Stripping back the unit, I got the model number of the unit which is bm5t-18c815-xf. Having a dive I couldn't find much on this outside of listings for second hand parts. But I see there is 4 connectors total, but one of the longer connectors didn't have anything in it and I don't see another cable?

The other thing I found was a Mini USB but there are no mini usb ports on the unit or anywhere that I could see and was wondering if anyone knew what it might be for?

I don't see any Bluetooth options in the menu either when looking through the settings.

I'm honestly just wondering if anyone knows what the deal is here and if there is anything I could do to potentially get bluetooth going on it or if I'm going to need to get a new unit put in?

You won't find any, 'bluetooth' options on your head unit unless it was fitted from the factory with the optional bluetooth module. Even then, it'll only work with a phone, it won't be capable of streaming music.

It's almost 10 years old now and in IT terms, that's an ice age! There are numerous threads on the forum about getting bluetooth modules as an after thought, but you won't have DAB+ either, so maybe consider getting a new head unit.

Someone sensible should be along soon...

Ahh that's fair enough, I don't really know enough about cars and what not my base is mostly Computers and Software development. Trying to learn a little bit about this car since it's only the second Car I've ever owned haha.

I'll have a nosey about the fourm for some potential upgrades because that's sounding like a good option and from what I took a part I don't think it will be overly complicated either!

Hi Ross. Would you take a photo of your headunit and post it please.

Your car is a 2014 model yes? Which spec car is it?

Do you see any aux sockets in the armrest cubby hole?

I've had a 2014 focus some yeas back. Ok it was titanium x and it had nav aux and bluetooth and could stream music via bluetooth.

I remember many many posts regarding upgrading the sound system back in 2015/16.

I don't really know what the Spec is, the most I can find online based on the Reg Plate is that it's a "Ford Focus Edge Tdci 95"

Edge is super basic unfortunately.  Zetec and above got Bluetooth as standard on Mk3's.

You can add a Bluetooth module, but I'm not sure if the wiring will be present on an Edge.

That’s the upgrade Sony unit, which should have Bluetooth.

I very much doubt the car was originally built with that Sony unit. More likely a previous owner has fitted it, but possibly not the bluetooth unit.

IS there a specific Bluetooth Module I can potentially buy? Or would I need to buy a full new unit?

Yes, but the problem is which one. As I said I doubt that the car was built with the Sony unit. So now it becomes a guessing game as to which bluetooth unit is compatible with it, and is the connecting wiring harness in the vehicle ?

Just take a look on eBay and you will see the problem:

Ahh right okay, it's weird that who ever had it before seems to of tried to potentially set something up as there is the Mini USB cable (which from what I looked up can be bought on the Ford Website as a Dashboard Interface Cable ) just routed through and not connected to anything where the Head is with no ports for it, but I'm not sure where it's actually going as I need to find some time to try and trace the thing.

Plus the Actual unit that takes the CDs and the Arial cables has a port on it with nothing in it so I assume there is some sort of cable missing or it was meant for one of those modules to connect to the back of it but that's just a guess from me.

Probably not that weird, with a mindset of 'how difficult can it be...', then discovering exactly how difficult it could be 😂

There is even the possibility that a previous owner uninstalled some parts ( to use later ! ) and that it once did work but after various parts were 'robbed' now it's just a mass of bits and bobs.

I would contact @Rowan112 and see if he can offer you a complete system. He will even guide you though how to install it.

Hi Ross. Thanks for the photo. Now then. What happens when you scroll through the menu? Please describe each page.

If you look in the armrest cubby hole what do you see? Take a photo please.

With that head unit being the Sony one I personally think you do have at least an Aux input and Bluetooth.

That headunit was the one I had in my 2014 titanium x except for mine had nav (where yours shows display)
