Auto transmission (DSG type) fluid.

Hi,  I've been wondering if I should check the auto gearbox oil on my 2014 1.0L Turbo boost Fiesta but where do I check it?   From a quick visual check in the engine compartment  I can't see a dipstick device of any sort on the transmission.  Also should it be changed and when ?  Admittedly, the car has only done around 26,000 miles but has always had routine engine oil and filter changes, latterly by an independent garage rather than a Ford dealer.

If it needs top up or renewing, what is the specification for the auto transmission fluid?  Nothing is mentioned in the handbook other than directing you to the service schedules and a Ford dealer.

Any advice appreciated.

Personally if I had a 2014 Ecoboost 1.0 then I'd spend my money on changing the wetbelts now, and worry about the gearbox oil later.

There is no means of checking the oil on the gearbox and Ford UK will usually tell you they are sealed for life. However it is possible to do a part oil change on them which ideally should be at 37500 miles if my memory is correct. I'm sure others will be along who know the full gearbox service details like @DaveT70

Thanks. Excuse my ignorance, but what are the 'Wetbelts'?   I've not had a DSG auto before only CVT and Epicyclic.  Is this the timing belt ?  (Bear in mind the car has only done 26,000 miles).

Timing belts etc as thats why these engines are known as Ecoboom.

The wet belts are the rubber timing belt (aka cambelt) and oil pump belt on the engine.  Totally separate from the gearbox.

However, the automatic 1.0 engine uses an additional balance shaft which puts extra strain on the oil pump belt.  So they are more prone to failure than the manual 1.0's.  These belts are recommended every 150k or every 10 years by Ford.  Though many with low mileage don't make 10 years so we would recommend they are replaced sooner than that.

Costs are very high for wet belt replacement, at least a 4 figure sum, so if the gearbox is performing well, and you intend to keep the car a while, the money is probably better spent on the wetbelts than any gearbox maintenance.  As Unofix, these gearboxes are meant to be sealed for life with no recommended oil change interval.  (Though the belts were also recommended to last the lifetime of the vehicle so Ford may change their mind on gearbox servicing in the future too!).

Sorry sometimes I forget that not everyone is familiar with the notoriety of the cambelt (timing belt) on the Ecoboost 1.0

These engines use a system of a 'rubber' cambelt inside of the engine running in oil. Ford original said they would last as lifetime, which technically they still do. Once the cambelt fails the engine is totally scrap. Due to the significant failure rate of the wet belts Ford changed their mind and now recommends that they be changed at around 150,000 miles or 10 years which ever occurs first. Cars with low mileage and approaching the 10 year age seem to suffer more premature failures than those with normal mileage.

Many independent garages will not quote to do the work on these engines, and often the only option is to have the work which is quite extensive, carried out by a main Ford dealer. Expect to pay between £1200 and £1800 depending on what exactly is replaced, and in which part of the country you live.

Your Auto Gearbox (DCT250) is a dry clutch system, don't worry too much about the fluid yet, get the cam belt and oil pump belts changed ASAP.

Ford will be able to tell you what fluid you need for the transmission.

Ford will also tell you that the transmission is sealed for life.

Keep your battery in tip-top condition, Powershift does not like low voltage.
