Focus 1.8 fuel not getting through!

Featured Replies

Car died on me. I think it's the fuel pump under the back seat. As it don't make a noise. Not even when I supply 12v. But also I don't seem to read 12v when ignition on from the 2 thick wires. As I believe the other 2 thin wires are for fuel level. I can't find fuse or relay to check.

Please could anyone help with all fuse/relay locations to do with fuel pump and any help with figuring out what's going on.

Much appreciated 👍

This engine doesn't use a tank fuel pump.

Iv managed to replace it and now it's working fine. But I took a shortcut. I couldn't really raise it high enough to drop the fuel tank. So I cut a square out under the seat. And now I can access the fuel pump with minimum effort. I am cutting a square out of a sheet of metal and gonna screw it over the hole. Not that it needs it as they is carpet over it and the back seat. The only thing I struggled with was the big screw on seal. I used jack handle and hammer to tap it round anticlockwise. And same to tighten it up.

Either way, it's done and working. So thought I'd leave this tip. Dropping the tank is a mess about ,but the proper way to do it. Cutting a hole is easy and easy to hide. Also maybe some models don't have a fuel pump... but some do.

I'm genuinely surprised by this.  Wasn't aware of any Mk2 Focus diesel using a tank pump.  They're fitted to some, but not powered - hence the hassle of priming the fuel filters with a hand pump.

@iantt Can you provide any more info?

No functional pump in the tank as far as I'm aware. Never come across one. If they did the pain the ***** bleeding wouldnt be necessary.

I can't understand it. Iv done nothing but buy new pump and fitted it. Now it's working and mpg gone up.. why would they sell replacement part for something that don't get used?. I gotta admit like I said I couldn't find a voltage but, nobody answered me so I went ahead and ordered the part. Which I have now changed and now seems to work?...

Also if it's a working pump why don't anyone put 12v to it with switch to save the priming. Which I also had to do...

Maybe it works with the engine running and not just ignition on? Clueless. All I know is I tried everything before I ordered pump. And since it's working. And iam a delivery driver so it's had some use since.

Also before I changed it, i primed it and started it 3 or 4 times and it ran till it ran dry.

On closer inspection of old pump. It don't have a motor, or either wires from other side of connection port. Except the 2 that are for fuel level. Wish I'd of known. But maybe old one is blocked or leak that was causing fuel to run back to the tank. But problem hasn't come back since. I'am wondering if they is a model that fits with an actual working pump or maybe adapt a 12v pump into the line. And finding what fuse needs putting in place to add voltage to that area. Just as a project or upgrade instead of manual priming.
