Mk2 Focus factory fitted speakers not working.

Featured Replies

I refitted what I assume is the factory original 6000CD head unit to my Mk2 to test the speakers.

It seems that the front passenger and both rear door speakers are not working. The same happens when tried with this unit or the newer Sony 6 CD changer.

The manual says to press the FADE/BAL button once for left/right balance and twice for front/rear fade. I can only access the balance setting.

Were they all made with a built-in fade setting?

This shows how to test your speakers...

In my car, both rear speakers don't work, and my driver's one is intermittent (works if you slap the grill!). I'm not into bangin' tunes, so it's never bothered me.

Thanks for that. I have just been out and tried it. It is exactly as I thought.

If the speakers themselves are gone, I could replace them next time I am at the breakers.

If the cables are broken, I probably wouldn't bother.

Were the factory fitted speakers known to fail?

LOL, it was a shock if they actually worked! In over 40 years of car ownership, the Focus ones were the only ones I've had fail.

Well this is a tad embarrassing LOL A bit of googling has advised that my LX was that basic, it didn't have rear speakers fitted! Wondered why they didn't work 🤣

I have an original 2005 brochure which says 6 speakers (4 front, 2 rear) were fitted to the LX as standard. The Sony radio and even CD changer were offered as an option on the LX.

I can see that the rear speakers on mine are there when I shine a light through the grille.

Looking at photos on ebay, the speakers are pop-riveted to the window regulator sheet metal. That means the rivets will need drilling out to change them.

Perhaps the rear fade function is automatically disabled to protect the amplifier from damage if the speaker circuit is broken.

Bummer! LOL I was almost relieved to think there weren't any speakers fitted, now, I'm left with the fact I have two broken ones 🤣

If you can find a high spec model at the scrap yard, the speaker quality should be better than the LX ones.  The 'premium' audio setup was not just the headunit, but the speakers as well.

I know the facelift Titanium had the premium speakers as standard (best speakers I'd ever had in a car...including those I'd previously fitted as an upgrade lol!) but not so familiar with pre-facelift specs.  I would assume Ghia got premium speakers in PFL...

So far I have only even seen lower spec Focus models at this particular breakers.

There was a similar aged diesel ST Mondeo last time. Are those speakers the same?

Mk3 Mondeo speakers are totally different unfortunately.

Hi Antonov,

Your speakers, like you figured out yourself, are there. However, they are propably burnt out, especially the rear ones.

Mine (2008) were not working when i bought the car. After fiddling around with the fuses, I got the rear speakers to work, and they sounded just fine. the next day my car unfortunately had a dead battery, and after swapping it out for a new one, the rear speakers failed to produce and sound, even with the notorious speaker test. My fears were confirmed when using a multimeter I checked the speakers and head unit, and found out with 100% certainty that my rear speakers were indeed blown. i cut out the paper bits and fit some old pioneer 130mm speakers i had laying around so i could see if these would burn out aswell after some time, but after 3 months they are still working just fine. Yes, you will need to drill out the rivets in order to properly replace them, maybe even need to buy mounts / spacers for your new speakers. Mine are held on by sheer magnetic force to the old speaker magnets 😛, and will do so until I can cough up the money to buy some proper speakers to fit back there. So, in conclusion:

To properly check if you have actual, connected speakers in your rear doors, you will have to remove the door cards.

If fitted with speakers, check the wires from head unit to rear speaker connector with a contiuity check.

I would like to see what you are going to do with this!

Thanks for the reply.

My plan is to wait for a Ghia model to come into the breakers and take the speakers from that. I want the repair to be as cheap as possible. That also means I can fit them in with self-tapping screws in place of the pop rivets.

I know the rear speakers are there on my car as I can see them if I shine a LED torch through the grilles.

I can also confirm that holding down buttons 3 and 6 on the later round face Sony head unit does the speaker test. At least it did on the one I tried it with.

I'd recommend not going for original Ford speakers as it is most likely that they will get burnt out again, so if you want to avoid redoing this whole thing (potentially), maybe look for some used speakers, since you would like a more budget - oriented approach on this.

I installed a working front speaker from a 57 plate Style into my passenger door.

I replaced the pop rivets with M5 rivet nuts and bolts in case I ever have to remove the speaker again.

The audio does sound better already now I have working main speakers in both front doors.

I might not bother with the rears as there is rarely anyone else in the car, never mind in the rear seats. Neither of the Mk2s at the breakers had working rears when I tested them using the stereo test function.

Removing the door cards is a bit of a pain, but is easier with the proper tools to pop the clips off.

I finally got round to installing the rear door speakers from a scrap Titanium spec Focus. The audio already sounds better with a full set of working speakers.

The wiring was from the head unit was intact, the speakers themselves were the problem as expected.

I may also replace the fronts as I got a full set of the better speakers.

I have now fitted the front titanium spec speakers.

The sound was noticeably better as soon as the radio was powered on. I am not sure how to actually describe "better".

It is a worthwhile upgrade if you can find a set cheap.

I am now wondering if the wiring for the rear tweeters is fitted. If it is, they could possibly be added by fitting rear door cards from a car that had them.

Does your car have working rear speakers in the doors now ?

If yes, then the speakers with the tweeters just use the same wiring.

I replaced both failed rear main speakers. They are working as they should.

My car never had rear tweeters fitted. The rear door cards don't have anywhere to fit them.

I was thinking they could be added if the wiring from the head unit to the rear doors is already in place.

The tweeters are just connected in parallel with the existing rear door main speakers. There is no extra wiring to the head unit.

Thanks for the reply. Is the tweeter plug on the door loom as standard, but possibly taped up?

I will remove a door card when I am next at the breakers to have a good look at the wiring.

I'm confused. As per the official Ford brochure above, the LX has 2 x speakers in the front doors, 2 x tweeters near the A pillar, and 2 x speakers in the rear doors. Nothing should be 'taped up'...

  • Author

Even if they weren't fitted, the door wiring loom could be the same as models that did have them.

For example the LX didn't have front fog lamps, but the fog lamp plugs were fitted onto the front wiring loom. They were taped up and tucked out of the way so there were less types of looms.

Many vehicles use a combined 'Speaker' and 'Tweeter' so only one physical unit fitted with only one pair of wires.

I also have an original brochure. The Sony Audio system was an option on the LX.

It says this included 8 premium speakers (4 front, 4 rear).

This photo of a door taken from ebay shows a separate small speaker below the door handle.
