oh dear.... 

I was able to remove the EGR on my S-max and i'm not a "mechanic"... i DIY a lot, but ... no pro :) It is a bit uncomfortable but...

You have to remove the wipers and the windscreen cowl, then the EGR is relatively easily removable - except for the bottom bolt. That i managed to remove with the car on ramps and with 3 or so extensions 1/2 to 3/8 to 1/4 to (i think) a m5 Allen. 

 

About stopping - what about the intake throttle shutter? Is your vaccum actuated? Maybe a vacuum leak in a hose so it doesn't close as quickly ? .... just kickin' in the fog, possibly...
