Ford focus estate 2009 rear quarter panel water leak

Featured Replies

Hi,everyone hope you can help me out I have water coming down the rear interior quarter vent I think it coming from under the standard roof bar ?many thanks

Shwmae Dai,  Welcome to the self-propelled collander - aka Focus.  Ford have offered rainwater leaks as standard during the Focus' production run over the years.  See the stickies above - Mk 1 faults, Mk2 faults, Mk 3 leak.  You will have hours of reading on the subject, and there are legion clips on utube.  Depends on how depressed you wish to become.

In my 07 1.8 dtci estate I've seen rainwater drip from the o/s sunvisor mount, run down the n/s carpet from door bottom to footwell, run down both rear lining quarters from the rigid trim panels, and also there's the potential in the driver's footwell next to the tunnel (which could be from the a/c).

Entry points suggested include roofrails, light clusters, glass seals, door and tailgate seals, tailgate hinges, wiring and washer tube grommets, and vents behind the rear bumper.  So you'll have plenty to occupy yourself and keep you out of mischief.

I lost the will to live trying to find the answer, so just put up with it and dry it out from time to time.  Pity, as otherwise it's a good chariot.

Thanks you reply. I think I will leave it ,I value my sanity more than the car .

I too have this (after heavy rain water coming through the rear vents either side of window).

Assuming you have the type of rails I have (fixed with slit running all the way down, not raised)- sort of similar to this:

I bought some Granville Black Silicone Sealant 40g from Halfords and applied this to the bottom end of the roof rails (open the boot and either side), then put some around the rail rivots at the back.

I would recommend wearing disposible gloves as this stuff is very messy and sticky, marigolds work well as they are rubbery and it makes it easier to apply the sealant.

This reduced the amount of water that came in.  I still occasionally get some water in heavy downpours bit not nearly as much as I used to.

Could also be the light cluster where is needs sealing as per the forum.  I might apply sealant roudn these areas too.

Normskii, " applied this to the bottom end of the roof rails (open the boot and either side), then put some around the rail rivots at the back".  Did you have to drop the roof lining for this?

I just put it at the very end of the rails:

Its where the rails end .  Mine were starting to crumble a bit.  I expect though after the previous topic (Focus DA II 2005 water leak) about the light fittings I imagine the rain goes down the rails, under the boot lid then down into the light fitting then through the holes where the lights are:

Just a thought...as its only heavy rain when I get a couple of pools of water on the parcel shelf in the boot.

Also see here:

It starts with puddle in the spare wheel well but then goes onto the issue you/we/I are having.  This also mentions the holes that the lights go into (page 2).
