Battery Drain " Just cant seem to find anyone to help"

Featured Replies

I have a 2010 Ford S-max Titanium sport 2.0  60 plate. Bought car in mid 2022  car did drive good for about a month then car used to go  flat a lot from overnight parking had to keep jump starting it so garage took the car back couldn’t find a issue so brought car back to me and i used it for another few weeks back to the same problem overnight just drained again. So i called out an electrician he looked over car and charged me 40 pound and told me my cluster clocks was out of date that could be the problem and couldn’t find a drain on the battery. So i called AA out they checked car and said there was a problem with the battery he was so sure he said  so i brought  a new battery car ran for another few weeks same flat as a pancake overnight so was back to jump starting so got back InTouch with garage told them what AA had said and the electrician had said, also that i changed the battery but still draining.so they took the car back to check again this time they changed the battery for a Stop Start battery and said all fixed you need a battery like this because this car is a stop start (which its not ) so anyway almost a year now has gone and i went out this morning cars completely flat had to jump start it i drove around for about an hour came back turned car off and car battery reads 13.8 volts says fully charged so i left it for an hour checked it again now reads 12.8 I’m worried I’m going to go bed and in the morning I’m back to the same problem i had a year ago. I have also checked there is no lights left on in car.

I just dont know what to do any help or advise would be great thank you.

A brand new fully charged battery in peak condition will eventually settle at a voltage of 12.65V after a few hours. Let's not forget they are referred to as a 12V battery.

If you check the battery about one hour after parking you should find the battery terminal voltage to be typically 12.60V and after a four or more hours it will settle down to around 12.40 this is totally normal behavior for a healthy battery.

You may well have a parasitic draw, which are very difficult to trace, given that each time you do anything on the car you cause all of the modules to 'wake-up' and it takes around 15 to 20 minutes for them to go back in to sleep mode.

On a 2010 S-Max model a common cause of battery drain is caused by the canbus network being kept awake by a faulty instrument cluster. Often the problem can be resolved by having the IC repaired/refurbished.

Hi thx unofix for getting back to me well for some reason car did not go flat so I’m good so far and the battery is 12.6 volts..

i did have a android stereo fitted not long ago i was told the car Bluetooth module that was connected to the original stereo will stay on now that I’ve changed the unit so iv now unplugged that Bluetooth module as the android has its own Bluetooth.

but what I’m really confused about is my fuse box as in slot F10 and F9 are missing??  F10 is the Engine control module F9 is the maf fuel injectors and many other things should they be there i wanted to pull the fuse on the ecu fuse to try reset it but seems missing?

any help will be great thx

Over the many years your model of S-Max was in production the use of various fuses were changed many times. This depended on the model year, the trim level, options fitted, and which engine the car had fitted. In some cases as you have already found the fuses are no longer used on your particular vehicle.

As technology has improved over the years, more and more equipment in the vehicle is now electronically protected by modules like the BCM. This is beneficial as electronic protection is intelligent and can determine if a fault is just momentary or permanent. It can automatically restore power once a fault has been cleared without the need to replace a fuse.

If you still want to do a full reset of all modules on the car then disconnect the battery negative lead for at least 20 minutes. If you have the type of radio that requires a code make sure you have it before disconnecting the battery.
