Ah!!

Now I understand the problem. Whilst this is a common fault on the Focus and Fiesta models 2013 and before, I don't think I've come across a 2017 model with this fault.

The usual problem is the actual tailgate handle and button assembly. They get moisture inside of the button which seems to cause the problems with the locking. As I say not something I've seen reported here on the forum for a 2017 model. The actual handles are cheap and easy to replace, have a look on eBay they can be found for £20 or less. In your case this might not be the cause  but it's a low cost option to try before digging in to much harder problems.

cheers for that unofix , do you mean the latch or the button / number plate light

See the eBay link posted above, it is a handle and button combined with the number plate light.

@unofix any other ideas bud, swapped out the switch and same problem ?

mmmmmm............

That's not good news 🙁 The signal to release the tailgate latch comes directly from the Body Control Module. So it's the BCM that is actually unlatching it. That kind of only leave two options either there is a fault with the BCM, or that the BCM is receiving an input signal to tell it to unlatch the tailgate.

I'll have a look at the schematics and see if it is possible to disconnect the unlatch input signal to the BCM. If so then you will need to do that next.

It seems that the remote unlock signal is processed inside of the BCM and can't be isolated. You can for test purposes disconnect pin49 on connector C2280B just to prove there is no release signal being picked up from the tailgate handle.

You can also use FORScan to check that there are no stored DTC's relating to the fault. One other thing to try is disconnect the vehicle battery negative lead for 20 minutes which will force a reset of all modules.

cheers Uno, got my mechanic to plug his snap on computer in, no faults came up, he reckons it could be dampness causing the fault, he's going to look At the wiring at the top of the boot too incase it's a case of a damaged wire !
