Can you put an alloy in the spare wheel cradle??

Featured Replies

Looking at retro fitting the spare wheel cradle & winch under my grand tourneo connect, and from factory it would have come with a full size 16" steel wheel so can anyone think of any reason I can't put a 5th alloy in there instead as they're 16" too? 🤷

Wheel part is 2251795, just seeing if anyone else has done this with either a transit or tourneo, or whether I'm missing anything obvious?

It will fit OK, but the alloy wheel will be heavy when winding it up. Also best if you can find a very large plastic bag (or similar) to put the wheel in as it will get covered in @@@@

Fair point. Someone mentioned elsewhere rhat they couldn't get the check strap on it properly cos the alloy is thicker, having not seem one in the flesh, reckon that's highly likely?

This brings back memories. I use to own a 1987 205 1.9GTi, the spare for it was a full size alloy but held in a wire cradle underneath the boot. I remember at the time buying an optional protector bag to keep it nice & pristine...

Always hated this setup on the Peugeot's.  306's used the same system due to torsion beam suspension in the way of a wheel well.  The securing bolt was always seized by 10 years old and the tyre was wrecked by a decade of road salt and mass temperature variation...

Wheel bag would definitely be useful if you do go ahead with it.
