U0118 Fault Code - Diesel 1.8 2009 MK2 HELP!

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

New here!

my car threw and engine management light up today and when I got it plugged in it came up with the above fault code

U0118 - Lost Communication with Fuel Additive Control Module.

I have googled a few things, but nothing seems to pin point this exact code without having other codes as well. I’m just wondering if anyone else has had just this code come up, and what would be best to do next? New to owning a focus so all help is much appreciated

If I’ve posted in the wrong place, could someone advise where would be the right place?

Your 2009 diesel is before the current AdBlue additive so I think you can rule that out. There was before that a period when Ford used an additive called 'Eolys' or 'PAT' fluid which maybe be what the error is in connection with. DTC's that begin with "Ux xxx" are communication errors on the Canbus network and are not usually a fault in themself. Perhaps @TomsFocus would know more about your engine.

How did you come to discover the U0118 error, do you have the engine management light on or has the car gone in to limp mode?

1.8 TDCi doesn't have a DPF so no need for any additive.

Are you sure it's not a 1.6?

Cluster solder problem?

Sorry Tom, yes it is a 1.6. Got 1.8 in my head as that’s what my old car was before my focus. Had the 1.8 a lot longer then I have had this 🤦🏼‍♀️

I thought maybe this, as at one point it was just randomly cutting out completely whilst I was driving along. After a quick search a bang on the dashboard brought it back to life again. But then it stopped doing it and I never had an issue again

The error came up as the engine management light came on and I got a mate at work who has a code reader to plug it in for me. I’m not sure what brand as I gave him my keys for him to check it when he had a spare 5 minutes. Car has never gone into limp mode since the engine management light came on, and it’s never missed a beat either. So it’s really puzzled me what it could be, and a quick google shows additives but my car doesn’t have AdBlue

Ok thanks, 1.6 TDCi does use Eolys additive up to 2009.

The FACM is under the rear seat base.

This code could be caused by the cluster fault, but I'm not convinced yet.  My money would be on either a faulty module or a damaged wire.

If you can get Forscan or ELMConfig on it you can check whether the FACM is connecting to the other modules and also check the fluid level.

True it doesn't have AdBlue as I said. It does use Eolys which eventually does run out and has to be refilled. With out using FORScan to get the full Ford specific DTC's I'd be a bit cautious about the U0118 code which is purely a communication error on the canbus.

I'd say that's significant.

I'd say that quote was taken out of context.   I'm not saying it isn't the cluster, just that I'd want to see further proof first.  There may be more than one fault on this car.

Although you do raise an interesting point...it may not necessarily be the solder issue if one bang seems to have cured the cutting out issue...maybe the plug in the back of the cluster is just loose.  That's easy enough to check for anyone with a screwdriver.

You could be right, Tom, the plug could be loose but if the cluster hasn't been resoldered already we all know it's going to need doing at some point.
