Millage error cluster fault etc

Featured Replies

Hi there

I have a 66 plate so 2016 model 1.25 petrol car from new, 6 weeks ago the millage went from 43,000 to 143,000 and the C vanished off the tempreture reading on the dash LED display. I took it to a garage who ran a diagnostic check and confirmed that the ECU/EPRON was reading the correct millage of 43,000 miles when the LED display was showing 143,000.

The car was plugged in and a program ran and changed the display back to the correct millage and the temprature C returned,  all was fine but after 5 weeks it has came back, same fault millage gone back to 143,000 from 43,000  and the C has vanished.

I have been advised that a new cluster might be required, well more so the LED display from the unit as a possible "dry solder problem" costs are mounting up and it is annoying as i have had the car from new and have MOT certs to confirm i only do 7000-8000 miles per year from new, luckily i had it MOT'ed soon after the millage was sorted so i have sometime to get it sorted before next MOT.

Any advice would be great, not much info on the net.

Very unlikely on a 2016 model. That fault was all sorted and put to bed by the end of 2013. That's not to say that you don't have a faulty display and that it could be a poor connection. Before spending lots of money on a new instrument cluster, I'd first check if there are any DTC's being logged especially like 'Lost communication with IC'

You need to use a laptop and the programme FORScan and the vLinker FS cable.

FORScan: https://forscan.org/download.html

vLinker FS cable: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Vgate-vLinker-Adapter-FORScan-MS-CAN/dp/B0952P4MLP

Today's a good day to buy the cable as it's only £26.34 with Amazons Black Friday deal

Thanks for the reply. I have ordered a new cluster unit (dash display) as the lad said he would try to take the lcd display out of it and fit to my current one and try that.(was £40 same year and spec as current car)

For the software you suggested is it just a case of downloading that software plugging into the port in the car and running the program? What does it tell you error messages etc?

Wonder where the wiring is for the dash cluster. Guessing hidden in the dash somewhere.

It's such an annoying fault as makes the car look like it's 143k instead of 43k, I can live without the c on the temp sensor.

Would that download and lead allow me to change the lad display millage? Baring in mind the ecu or epon I think you call it will already carry the true millage and all I would be doing is cha ging the 1 back to a 0 to read 43k instead of 143k

Hi Yep sounds near identical, mine was changing as i sat in the car and took pic's but now seems fixed on 143k. strange how it is the 1 and the C off the temp reading. needs sorting as de-values the car by about 4k.

I was hoping it might f been something simple like a lose wire or LCD display faulty so it could be fixed but nothing having a car workshop back ground and already having a diagnostic tell me the computer is reading 43k but the LCD display is 143k but thats it and £100 lighter its not looking a cheap fix.

Legally, the number on the odometer doesn't actually matter.  It doesn't matter for MOT and it doesn't matter when selling.  It's only if you purposely mislead a buyer into believing a lower mileage that it becomes illegal.

So if you never intend to sell, just ignore it.  If you'd only sell privately, just keep some sort of photographic record of the change as you have done.

Only problem I can think of is that trading in could be difficult, as the trader may not want the expense of repairing the cluster before selling it on.

Truth right there.  It's a common misconception that people have, that it's an actual requirement.

Thanks, still wishing to try and have this resolved though, it is just finding a garage or someone who would take a look.

Cluster issue, signal issue, loose wire, lcd display fault, broken wire, program error...could be a few issues but hopefully resolve this before what little hair I do have falls out

Where abouts up here are you, Richard?

Hi newcastle tyne and wear

Are you sure it is not just a faulty LCD screen? My LCD display went on mine, first it was adding digits, then disappearing digits and finally just fully went off. So bought a cheap cluster on eBay and just replaced as the below.  Really easy fix (if this is the same problem you have).   Lots of youtube videos on how to remove from the dash, just a few torx screws and clip at the back.  Took me less than half hour.  If it is just the LCD, you can use your current cluster and no programming is needed.

Thanks to this guy:

Thanks for the reply, i have purchased a 2nd hand cluster unit already as it happens (during the panic stage) i was reluctant to do it myself in case i caused an issue with the immobilizer etc as TBH i never worked on cars.

I was hoping a local garage or someone on here with the diagnostic tools may of been able to shed some light on it and at the very least eliminate some posibles or try and fit the LCD unit, for a fee of course.

The tool Unifix posted looked good if it is easy to use, if its a free download then its only £25 for the wire...not 100% sure what this would show me if i managed to navigate through it or if it would allow me to change the 1 to a 0 again as this is the only number out from the display to the ECU reading...well that and the C is missing off the temp value.

Hi could be a faulty lcd display, maybe someone could advise.

OK so read online about the self test I.e holding the trip Button in and turning the key to run through the menus, the menu I was interested  In was the lcd display test or I think it is, now see pics below. The 2nd pic is the test ran on my car showing some missing lines, the 1st pic shows one from a video of the test on utube.

You can clearly see on mine that the temp C/F is missing and the first number is not correct.

So I am guessing it is a faulty lcd display? Love other people's options before I have it changed over

I'd agree that looks like a screen fault rather than a connection fault.

If you decide to just get the LCD display replaced, one of my friends should be able to do it for you.  His shop is in Seaton Delaval though.  https://www.incartunes.co.uk/

David that runs the place is one of the few people I trust with my cars.

Update for people as I hope threads like this help others and stop them going through hassle or stress.

I THINK I have fixed it, I ordered a new cluster unit and after watching a couple itube videos changed over the lcd screen myself, took maybe 40mins.

Ran the test and all segments working and the millage and temp back to normal, see pics.

I did have an issue with the speedo as I had caught the clock when removing it but a quick trip hold self diagnostics check reset the clocks to there correct position and all is working good, after 2 days. Tested speed with downloaded GPS and car reading all good so think it's sorted.

Thank you to everyone who helped and I hope to be able to help others in the future.
