Transit 2.2, 2013 knocks until normal temperature

Featured Replies

Hello,  I have a 2013 transit 2.2 diesel,  when I accelerate from cold start up it knocks embarrassingly loud until the temperature gauge reads normal at which point it purrs all day long even when stopping and starting again (unless it's gone stone cold again), diagnostic done by my garage shows no faults,  can anyone tell me what is causing this please,  thank you in advance, Eddie.

Sounds like pure mechanical wear of the big ends. which at 130K could well be expected. Has the van been used for towing ?

Hello,  I don't know to be honest,I've owned it for just over a year and I haven't towed anything and it hasn't got any worse, would big ends not be noisy at hot temperatures when the oil thins, when this hits normal operating temperature it really does purr, its quieter than most transits that I hear.

Engine components expand and contract at all different rates, I can only say for past experience that the big ends knock more when cold. Perhaps @TomsFocus could offer some advice ?

Could be injector knock

. Seem to think there was a pcm update that helped and a reset/ relearn of the injector pilot correction factors.

I'd also lean more towards diesel knock than internal wear at this age & mileage.

Glowplugs may be worth checking although the cylinders should heat up long before the coolant does.

Wasn't aware of a PCM update for injectors so that's definitely worth looking into.

Hello and thanks for your time and advice, I have it booked in tomorrow for a reset but here's a strange thing, it was also booked in tomorrow for a driveshaft but it didn't last out so right before Christmas my garage replaced it and unbelievably the knocking has mostly stopped, it's now just a slight knock that still stops at normal operating temperature I'm amazed and so are the garage because they used to hear me driving past each morning and they also thought that it was an engine knock, I'll post after the reset and let you all know if it improves even more, again, thanks to everyone that offered advice, Eddie.
