MK2 Facelift self-diagnostics engine temperature

Featured Replies

Hello,

I've currently monitored my Engine temperature while driving and the display said like 111 celsius degrees at average, it sometimes gone up to 115 celsius degrees. This is after like driving 12-15-20 kms, in combined environment (city + country road). I haven't had a chance to check with OBD diagnostics yet. The diagnostics display setting is "Engine temperature" for me.

Car is a Ford Focus MK2.5, made in 2009 with Duratec HE 2.0 (engine code AODA). Is this normal temp or maybe under operating temp?

Thanks in advance.

The coolant temp is 30c below the dash menu reading on Mk2's.

So that's 81-85c.  It's a little cool but not excessive.  Thermostat is probably not sealing 100%.

Thx. Could this cause that my car runs a little rich? I have no trouble codes on dash neither in any modules, tho I kind of experience it in fuel consumption maybe (computer says 7.6-7.8 l/100 km avg) and also by exhaust smell after driving a longer distance and stopping. Also I sometimes noticed when I drove like 15-20 km and shut down engine then restarted it like 20 mins later, my RPM sometimes started from 1k (just like when the car warms itself up), so yeah im gonna definitely check OBD and then probably gonna get the thermostat replaced.

Why is the temperature reading 30c above the actual temperature?

I thought the reading seemed high when I tried the onboard test mode.

Because it is not coolant temperature but engine's temperature, I saw it in another thread aswell, that's why I asked about it.

No-one seems to know for sure.  It was originally assumed to be the actual cylinder head temp, which was then very basically (and poorly) 'calculated' to show coolant temp as exactly 30c below it.  But some engines do have actual coolant temp sensors yet the dash still shows 30c too high which seems to debunk that theory...

This engine is quite dated and never was very efficient.  That MPG doesn't sound too bad for one of these in all honesty and a bit of a fuel smell is normal.

Changing the stat may help a bit but I wouldn't expect much difference in MPG or exhaust smell afterwards.
