SOC new battery

Featured Replies

That is normal, usually a 12v lead acid is 1v above it's non charging voltage when charging (if your disconnected a charger after it read 14v it would read 13v before settling around 12.9/12.8)

Morning Neb_engineer & Tks, now showing 14.6v after approx 1hr 15mins charging. Just obviously dont want to fry anything. Is it better to take the battery out or do what I've done & charge in situ? If I were to remove the battery would I have to reset the bms? Sorry about all the questions just dont want to nause this up. Older cars back in the day were a piece of cake, nowadays electrics etc seem very complicated. Cheers.

The charger should tell you when it's done. It periodically stops charging to see what the battery voltage is (14.6 is just the charging voltage not the battery voltage). It will also be monitoring current flow to see if the battery is taking a charge.

Whatever you do, do NOT reset the BMS. If you've connected the charger to the positive and battery ground point on the chassis, then the BMS has been able to "see" the charge. If you've connected directly to the battery and bypassed the BMS, then it will figure out the SoC, within about 24 hrs of your next use of the vehicle. Or if you really want to force the SoC to recalibrate sooner, you can disconnect the negative terminal from the battery for 10 mins.

The BMS reset is only for fitting a new battery as it resets the battery age to zero and affects the aged based charging profile

Tks alexp999 & Neb_engineer

Its all done, just had a look & charger & it says Full. So in a little over 4 1/2 the battery is fully charged. So what can I take out of this? Firstly manually switching off Stop/Start is making a helluva difference. My mileage is small but doing that small thing is preserving the battery. Secondly unplugging the dashcam which I found was recording roughly @ 15min intervals throughout the night. Those 2 factors have had a positive effect on the charge of the battery.

I have to admit because of the amount of electrics in this car I was a bit nervous about charging it in situ. But all appears well thus far.

Tks for all the help & advice offered in such a friendly way. This site is great for that & I appreciate it.

Cheers
