2007 Ford Focus Eng Malfunction Light on then off.

Featured Replies

Hoping this is a slight glitch before I can get the car in for a look. I was driving home tonight form London tonight, about 120 mile journey. One the drive home I noticed the red oil light coming on then going off when I was making big turns, normally around roundabouts. No other noises or issues with the car. In fact, the alternator had just been replaced over xmas, with a warning that the battery might need replacing at some point. Then on the A10, the car had a slight hiccup. The Engine Malfunction Light with Transmission warning light came on and the red and amber lights next to it.

No drop in performance and no noises, not in limp mode either. I got it to a point I could pull over and stop safely incase I needed recovery. I tried restarting and it wouldn't start. Then I left it a few minutes and the car started without any issue and all the warning lights had gone. Drove home fine. I then let the car sit for an hour and then took it for a drive on the A10. No issues, no loss in power or any noises.

Any ideas?

Joe

The very first thing you need to do as a matter of extreme urgency is check the oil level. Lets hope that you find that the oil is correct.

If all is well with the oil level (and condition) then you probably have the infamous problem with the cracked solder joints on the instrument cluster which is very common for a 2007 Focus. They can be repaired/refurbished for around £90.

@rd457 will be able to help if it is the instrument cluster problem, but first check the oil level.

As stated, after checking oil, you can start investigating a possible instrument cluster fault, only discussed yesterday on the forum..

I had the instrument cluster replaced last year. I’ve topped up the oil and I’m sure it needs replacing. Would either one make the transmission warning come up?

Replaced, or repaired? If it was simply replaced, you could still have inherited the 'solder' issue...
