First MOT test to remain at 3 years.

Good news, some cars do silly mileages, the yearly MOT is the best decision as some people only use MOT to check if their tyres are legal or lights work.

I responded to the consultation saying that once a vehicle goes over 100,000 miles it should be checked every 6 months, but they ignored that, I also said there should be a way to report vehicles on the road with bald tyres, as you can't. A child's life is more important than you not being bottomed to pay £40 for a part worn

Thank goodness for that 🤣 Here you could wait 4-6 months for an appointment LOL The bureaucracy involved in 6 monthly appointments would simply grind the whole thing to a halt!

Just remembered too that during Covid, they extended the MOT duration to 2 years. The number of reported car accidents skyrocketed! Oh, wait a minute, they didn't... 😆

Oh I remember buying a car whose MOT got extended. Once I took it to the dealer they quickly got back to me saying they won't MOT it because they'd have to fail it for misting oil on the rear shocks.

Who I bought the car from couldn't give a damn. I therefore put a huge complaint and negative review for him in Autotrader.

I'm not sure I understand. If you bought the car with an MOT, it's only a snapshot of that one hour the car gets tested. It could technically fail on the way home from a 'pass' if a headlamp blows.

The amount of people driving around in 10 year old plus cars with bald tyres is shocking.

They get an advisory for "tyre near legal limit" then drive the whole next 12 months on them

You can get an MOT test easy, there's loads about

Perhaps I've hit a nerve there. @StephenFord have you checked your tyres??👍

My 4 tyres are just fine, all bought within the last 8 months. Here in NI the MOT system is totally different to mainland UK. We only have 22 x government run MOT centers, so choice is limited. There are no garage licensed MOT centers, which I like as there is no incentive to be failed an MOT so they can sell you a part to pass!

Since lockdown, the system had been under severe pressure, and even now it can easily take 3 to 4 months to get an appointment.

The PSNI issued a statement a while back that they will not prosecute for an out of date MOT if proof can be shown it is 'in the system'. Also, insurance companies have made similar provision for delays too..

I've done 18,600 miles this year alone, if it was a 2 year gap between MOT's then that would likely be knocking on the door of 40k miles!

Not quite. 6 month extensions were offered to cars whose MOT's expired in certain months, can't remember how the maths worked but the longest duration between tests would have been 18 months.

I wouldn't have expected there to be an increase in accidents (or breakdowns) during the COVID period. Quite the opposite.

My recollection is that there were far fewer vehicles on the road during that period.

Sorry, should have qualified that it was a 12 month extension in Northern Ireland, hence a 2 year gap between MOTs...

Stephen. If it wasn't for Covid etc etc then when I bought that particular car it would have had a MOT about 1 1/2 mo the old. That is almost new.

Now because of Covid and the extention in time for MOT's to get done that car didn't get a MOT done at its 'proper' time. Therefore the vendor didn't have to MOT it.

Sorry but I can't make it any clearer than that. And to those to liked your post I really do feel sorry for your ignorance.

Ah, then perhaps I didn't deserve the severe beating about booking appointments then?
