GPS after sync 2 - sync 3 upgrade

Featured Replies

Hello, I just upgraded my ford’s sync 2 to sync 3. I bought the full kit and it was programmed to my car. My sync 2 had navigation and compass working just fine. I installed kit’s provided gps antenna, but after I was done I noticed that my gps is not working as it should. If I am parked, the navigation jumps around, also compass seems to be off as well. I want to ask, did I had to remove the original GPS antenna? Maybe someone with similar experience could help me. It’s ford focus 2015. Thanks!

It could be a dodgy GPS antenna, try a different one

I contacted the guy who sold me the kit and he said that I need to remove my original sync2 gps antenna (gpsm), because they interfere with each other. Can this be true?

...if u fit aftermarket kit - do as the instructions say - then flag issues if you have any on its standard installation

Okay, thanks. I tried googling, but I cannot find where the gpsm is located in ford focus mk3.5 (2015) Europe model. Could anyone provide me the answer?

Use the original GPS aerial, no need to be changing to something else.

It doesn't work with Sync 3

I'm not sure, but if you have the new GPS antenna connected the old one can't be, as they connect to the same port.

Unless you've reconnected the old one by mistake.

Ask @Rowan112 he knows this conversion back to front

maybe the OEM GPS antenna is dead...

OR...

how are these GPS antennas powered? do they get a phantom feed (AKA 5v power back up the coax cable) to wake internal electrics - this is a common way DAB amps inside the physical antenna's get to work)

if so does the aftermarket headunit ONLY power its GPS antenna via an external (aka separate) 12v feed- hence why you'd need to use theirs....

or vice versa

Yes

You can't if you're coming from Sync 2 as it uses a different interface from the GPSM.

Sync 1 GPSM's connect to the FCDIM using a standard Fakra cable whereas Sync 2 does it through data lines.

Sync 2 to Sync 3 retrofits will require a third party GPS antenna.

OP - it's either a faulty GPS antenna or where you've positioned it isn't in an ideal position. Try relocating the antenna first before trying a replacement. The stock GPSM shouldn't interfere with an aftermarket antenna.

Thanks! That’s what I needed to hear. I’ll try to relocate gps antenna to a different spot.
