Canbus communication problem

2013 focus 1.6 TDI.

Gone into limp mode, misfiring on number 1 cyl , traction control light lit, engine management light lit 

Code reader says canbus communication error.

If you use FORScan it will be more specific about what the issue is.

You could have the infamous dry solder joint problem with the instrument cluster. 2013 models were generally the last to suffer from this issue. The standard test is to thump the top of the dashboard above the IC and see if anything changes.

Took the instrument cluster out yesterday and checked the circuit board, there doesn't seem to be any dry solder joints.

I'm not sure a simple visual inspection is sufficient in this case. I would suggest getting the board soldered anyway, if nothing else would be a good preventative exercise to head off future faults.  It's not that expensive a procedure compared to the numerous other stuff that can go wrong on the car...

Agreed. Most are hairline cracks that can really only be seen under a magnifier.

@rd457 probably has some close up photos of solder joints with breaks in them.
