Focus MK3 Power Steering Rubbing Noise

Featured Replies

Morning All,

Recently on my 2012 MK3 ZTEC I have noticed a sort of scraping noise when turning the Wheel, the car still drives fine but its obviously loud and troubling, I have had a look around online and cant seem to find anyone with the same issue so I thought I would ask here if anyone can shed some light on this if they have been in the same situation, I have linked a video below demonstrating what the noise sounds like

Thank you

Sounds kinda simmlar to how my old focus was early on in the failed power steering and steering rack senario. Although it is kinda hard to tell if the noise is more following the wheels moving or just the steering wheel.

The power steering failed gradually over about 6months, the noise getting worse and worse untill the error lights and warnings about steering malfunticon started apearing. Got the power steering rack replaced with a reconditioned one. 16 months later the oil seals failed on the steering rack and it again sounded similar but more grinding to that. No errors this time but oil ***** out everwhere and apparently it would require a whole new rack again. I got rid of the car at that point.

Hope yours is not as terminal !

Cheers Arwen, Im going to get it diagnosed soon but thanks for letting me know what happened with yours, if I were to replace the rack I would be going with a reconditioned one as well but hopefully if I do it lasts longer than yours did!

Cheers again

Hi Big Stu, my Focus is making exactly the same noise as yours. it's a Titanium X 2012. Did you find out what was the issue and what fixed it? Thanks
