Fiesta 1.6 tdci mk7 ecu swap

Featured Replies

Hi everyone this is my first post so firstly hello from Lincolnshire

i have just bought a 2011 mk7 1.6tdci fiesta with what appears to be a fried ecu from the previous owner fitting a new battery the wrong way round 🤦🏻‍♂️

im looking to replace the ecu but understand I will need all paired/coded parts.

what makes it harder for me is that it is keyless entry and keyless ignition.

What is the full parts list I would need off of the donor vehicle. Many thanks

You can buy an 'unlocked' ECU which saves needing to swap everything or have the immobiliser stuff recoded.

HDI-Tuning sell them for around £200.  (You can choose standard or remapped...)  I'm not sure how that compares to buying a used kit.

You would need ECU, BCM, key fobs, clocks and possibly ABS module.

As it's keyless, don't forget to swap the hidden blades in the fobs in case you ever need to gain entry with a flat battery.

Hi thanks for that HDI tuning had quoted me £395 for a remapped ECU and £325 for a like for like.

i just didn’t want to throw hundreds at it if there was a cheaper or easier way.  Also no sure what other issues I may come up against due to the original fault cause.

Donor vehicle I can have everything for £125 but wasnt 100% sure on all parts I needed and as he isn’t local To me the would all needed to be posted. Only Difference I can see is donor car is 5door and mine 3 door

Ah, that's a lot more than I was expecting.  Which ECU does it use?  I thought they were still EDC16 in 2011 unless it's an early 8v engine?

I can't be 100% sure that's all the necessary parts unfortunately.  Hopefully someone else can confirm.

The 5 door BCM could be a problem.  You may be able to program it differently for the 3dr using Forscan.

Ah.  That's EDC17 so will be the 8v engine I think.  Surprised it's so much more expensive at HDI-Tuning though.

Is that a Peugeot engine then?

Yes.  Both the 16v & 8v 1.6 TDCI engines were a joint venture between PSA & FoMoCo going right back to 2004.

Ok thanks, I will hold out and see if anyone has anymore input before I decide to send the ecu away to be tested or go down the replacement route.

appreciate all of your help so far

When looking for a replacement ECU what numbers are critical is it the HG I can allow to be different

Only the very last letter "G" can be different.

In an ideal world it should be 'G' or higher like 'H' 'J' 'K'  but you could risk 'F' if that is all that you can find.

Has anyone got a wiring diagram at all so I can check the power supply to the ecu

The closest schematic that i have is the Fiesta 2012 model

Just had the ecu checked and all seems ok, wondering if the original cause of the problem (fitting new battery wrong way round) has damaged a relay or an unknown fuse.

anyone have any ideas thanks

What's happening with the car now?

Does the dash light up?  Does the fuel pump whine?  Does the starter motor spin?

Nothing on clocks only red flashing led, radio works and display screen says press clutch to start, depress clutch screen goes blank.

Has it got a fully charged battery now?

As you've got power and comms to the cluster & GEM at least, it would be worth plugging it in for a fault code check.  Ideally Forscan, but if you've already got a generic OBD reader that's still worth trying.

Ah, my bad.  Forgot 'Press clutch' is on the centre screen on Fiesta.

Also no tank fuel pump on this engine.  Must have confused this thread with another one.

That scan tool is showing the battery is dead at 11.17v.  Either charge it or replace it then try again.

  • Author

Sorry the scan was done when battery was almost flat, it’s now been fully charged but haven’t been to it with the refitted ecu.  I’m guessing it’s going to be the same.  Checked all related fuses in glovebox and under bonnet. Are any relays like to be a cause.

Fuses that need checked:

High Current Battery Junction Box:   Mega Fuse 1 - 450A.          Mega Fuse 3 - 200A.

Engine Bay Fusebox:   Fuse 5 - 60A.     Fuse 15 - 20A.       Fuse 16 - 15A
