Which Focus would be more reliable

Featured Replies

That's the older Mk2.5, petrol with Euro 4 emissions. Saint Greta will send you straight to hell (with out passing Go) if you drive one of them 🤣

So a good choice, then?😀

Joking apart, just wondering about the auto thing, which seems to be mainly on the strength of an awkward (for Paul's daughter) gear lever position in a Mk 3 Focus?

Price premium for auto anyway, and less about in older models which both makes a good one harder to find and again, tends to push the price up.

Yes.  4 speed torque converter auto.  Be lucky to scrape 25mpg.  And the road tax is an eye watering £365 a year!

Also worth noting the seating position is different on the Mk2.5 compared to the Mk3.  I went straight from one to the other.

Wow !!

That's almost a £1 per day 😉

his such a useful group

So am I right in saying the powershift problems were from 2011-2015 excluding the 2.0 petrol ?

ie. if we looked for a 2.0 auto 2011-2015 and any petrol 2016+ it has a different auto box ?

Just looked on autotrader and the only petrol cars post 2015 are 1.0T ecoboost which I have also been told to avoid like the plague

Sounds more to me that we are not going to be able to choose one. Put petrol, auto, max budget £8k, 5 door, max mileage 80k and avoiding ecoboost I get  erm... ZERO

Just looked myself at 2015 on Mk 3.5 Focus autos, petrol (not 1.0), 80k miles max, any location and found:

10 - 1.6 125ps

2 - 1.5 150ps

2 - 1.5 182ps

As suspected, there are a heap more manuals.

Widening things to any make auto, still only get 128 in total, after eliminating Ford 1.0 Ecoboosts and Peugeot Puretechs, still some interesting ones - several Hyundai i30s, Vauxhall Astras, Renault Clio, Honda Jazz, BMW 118i, Skoda Rapid, Nissan Pulsar, Seat Ibiza, VW Golf etc.

In that age range, though, manuals are overwhelmingly in the majority.

Might be an idea to tackle it the other way round - find a manual that your daughter can operate comfortably.

Euro 4 and later Petrols are exempt from clean air zone charges for now.

Not having to pay £12.50 a day to drive is the reason I bought my Mk2 Petrol.

Information about the various zones here:

Thanks. So how do I know it's a 3.5 ie doesn't have the powershift that breaks !

They were all Mk 3.5 (2015 model year on, large grille) Hopefully one of our autobox experts will comment on that aspect.

That's the old, Mazda 4 speed, blooming awful, my Mom had one of these. Never knows what gear to be in, drank fuel

1.6 125ps - DCT250 Powershift - Dry, avoid

1.5 150/182ps 6F35 Torque converter, 6-Speed, not too bad (when it's working OK) fluid MUST be changed, at least, every 40,000 miles or it starts slipping

And then 1.0 Ecoboost, pre 2015 is DCT250, post 2015 6F15 torque converter (absolutely blooming awful also)

I would seriuosly look at other manufacturers (if you're determined to have auto)

VAG DSGs are OK (without silly mileage)
