Mk2 - Clutch Release Bearing Noise

Featured Replies

Hi when I press the clutch down I can hear a squeal or squeak coming from the engine bay area.

Suspecting this is a clutch release bearing on the way out?

Can anyone confirm?

Thanks

Very probably on a 2008 model that possibly still has the original clutch.

Well it has a receipt for the clutch, but I guess they clearly didn't do a clutch kit did they....doh! It's just states a clutch...but really you should do the release bearing, pressure plate, clutch (and flywheel is scored / damaged).

That's going to be a bit of pain in the butt job.....

Gearbox off......bet that's going to be fun!

Need to find a good guide that shows me all the detail.

I am experienced in removing at least a manual gearbox (several times) on my Golf Mk5 so hopefully not too different.

I'd at least put a new clutch in at the same time as changing the release bearing. You don't want to have to repeat the job again next year. 👍

Except VW driveshafts are bolted so easy to remove and keep all the gear oil in the 'box on those... :whistling:

When was the clutch receipt dated out of interest?  Does it itemise the clutch parts or list a brand?

Might be a budget 3 piece such as Transmech.  Definitely one to avoid when sourcing parts yourself.

I've got a picture somewhere.....I believe it was from Car Spares Distribution, Dudley....

Looks like it was only the clutch....

BHBTMK00172 - CLUTCH FOCYUS 1.6-03

Dated 23/11/22

£59.11 (inc. VAT)

Nothing comes up when I search that part number though....so must be an obsolete part now.

I may email them and see what they say.

Was made by Teckmarx...  Never heard of them.  But £60 for a clutch doesn't suggest a high quality item.   I agree with Unofix, replace the full 3 piece kit while you've got the 'box off.

Found it:

https://www.carsparesltd.com/ford-focus-1.8-petrol-2003/product/clutch-friction-cl-clutch-parts-flywheels-clpt-cl/clutch-kit/BHBTMK00172

Appears to be just clutch and pressure plate....no CSC / clutch slave cylinder (with release bearing).

Are we advising a Clutch kit such as:

LUK

LUK622315133

LUK622315134

or

VALEO

VLO834376

Correct.  I've found the updated version too.  Note the part number includes 'CS' for the 3 piece kit.

Yes.  Valeo would be my preference but either should be fine.  Will have to find out what the difference is between the two LUK part numbers.

@TomsFocus thanks let me know if you find out please....

and why Valeo as a preference? I've always gone LUK for their "Pro" kits.

The Valeo comes in a prettier box...

Seriously though, a few years ago there were rumours around some fake or remanufactured LUK kits being sold in the UK.  Must admit I can't remember how much truth was in it or what the outcome was.  I haven't had any problems fitting LUK clutches for other people, but preferred Valeo myself as they were the original part back in my Peugeot days.  Also liked the clutch aligner tool that came free with Valeo kits, though that may have been costed out nowadays.

Bizarrely, the '34' LUK part number is for pre-2006.  And was replaced by the '33' part number from 2006 onwards.  Not sure how they've calculated that.  It seems the clutch plates are the same but the slave cylinder is different.

Just had a quick look and search and it would appear the VALEO (VLO834376) comes in cheaper....

but isn't compatible for my vehicle....

Might be another number.

Are you able confirm which VALEO kit is?

  • Author

Showing either

834376 or 834589

unsure on difference?

Can't seem to access the Valeo parts catalogue online without putting in personal details unfortunately.  I suspect it'll be the same as LUK, different slave cylinders.

When I put my VIN in the search I get 3 options:

826743 (2pc KIT)

834376 (3pc KIT with CSC)

834589 (3 pc KIT with CSC)

Yeah, the slaves are different on those two if you click on the parts list at the bottom each page.

Top one is 810037

Bottom one is 810117

Not sure which one is correct right now but can have a better look tomorrow morning if you don't find out in the meantime.

Just checked Ford parts list and that suggests Finis number 1548409.

That only appears in the reference  list for CSC 810037.

Meaning that 834376 should be the correct 3 piece kit.

Simple, right?

Thanks @TomsFocus so VALEO 834376 in theory should be the correct kit. Appreciate your help.
