Does my door hinge need replacing?

Featured Replies

Recently my drivers door hinge has been making a single 'clicking' noise on opening/closing/ On closer inspection, it looks like an insert on the hinge bar has a break in it. I can easily live with the sound, but am concerned that the integrity may be compromised and soon when I open door, it'll end up on the floor! Is it fine just to ignore?

Yes, it's broken. Takes only 20 minutes to change it. You will find plenty of used ones on eBay for £10 to £15 they are all the same for your model, Left or Right it's the same part.

This a is brand new one from Ford:

Now ordered, got the genuine Ford one as it's an inexpensive part and Ebay offering another 15% discount on listed price. Will get, 'my man' to fit it when I get it - thank you...

Just to point out that's not a hinge. It's the restraint strap. If it breaks the door won't fall off but it will be able to open so far that it causes damage to the door and wing panel.

Commonly known as the door check arm 👍

Thanks. Couldn't remember the correct term due to senility encroaching.

I've always called it a check strap.  They were regularly breaking on the 306s!

Peugeots weren't built at all well.  On my 205GTi, every time I accelerated, the small surround for the digital clock popped off falling to the floor. Easily fixed by some BluTak which held till I sold it LOL

that's the correct name - in the old days it was a leather strap ...keeping it in check

hold/keep something in check

phrase

to limit something:

They are designed to break, especially if you let the wind take the door out of your hand etc

All done, with all respect to @unofix, this may be a 20 minute job if you know exactly the process of removing a Mk2 door card, and all the fixings are are easy to remove. This is the 1st time this card has been removed since built in 2005. Actually took 35 minutes LOL

Door card in case someone wants to remove same and would like to see where the concealed fixings are...

Interior door plate, you need to undo all the bolts, and un-fix from bottom to allow your hand access to the 'strap'

New door strap, totally silent in operation!

Think the check-arm on my drivers side is noisy so may need replacing at some time so that helps to know 👍

My experience of removing the door pads, don’t be surprised if the plastic housings for the clips break instead of the door pins releasing as intended.

In theory a sharp pull on the pad (in area of each clip) will disengage the clips before pulling fully away from the door itself but I’ve had the doghouses break or leave the pin still in the door.

Got some spare pins to cover the ones that broke and some plastic welding/cable ties to repair the door pad.

I must admit, I held my breath a few times when the guy was removing/putting back the door card. He did a great job and not one single clip was broken either way, just a satisfying locating snap. That SnapOn trim kit he used was very impressive. Manufacturers seem obsessed with concealed fixings, maybe I'm just odd but I'd be quite happy with 4 big exposed bolts holding it on LOL

I don't think it's an obsession with concealed fixings, more an obsession with speed of assembly and therefore with cost reduction.

And yeah, you are odd 🤣.
