Ford focus mk3 drive shaft manual vs auto

Featured Replies

Hello everyone,

My car is a focus 2017 1.5 tdci auto powershift, I was looking to replace my both drive shaft, phoned the main dealer and I have been quoted £1542 for parts only which I think it is way too much, I looked in ebay, ECP and no where seems to stock them, in the other hand there seems to be vast amount of manual ones available for a reasonable price both used and new ones, is there a big difference between both manual and auto, also someone near me breaking focus mk3 2017 auto but this one is the 1.0 ecoboost will this one share the same drive shaft as the 1.5 tdci?

Any piece of advice with someone came across this issue will be really helpful.

Thanks

Drive shafts are not interchangeable !!

If a petrol 1.0 shaft would work on a 1.5 diesel do you think Ford would make different parts ?

That is the confusing part, there is a new drive in stock on eBay, and on the description it said 1.0, 1.5 tdci, 1.6

Indeed !!!

Perhaps they all do use the same drive shaft. I'm sure that @TomsFocus will know the answer.

The driveshafts aren't all interchangeable.  They're different lengths and have a different number of splines at the gearbox end depending on which gearbox it's for.

1.0 EcoBoost uses a different autobox to 1.5 TDCI so they're not interchangeable.

Both 1.5 TDCI & 2.0 TDCI use the same Powershift gearbox, so they have the same number of splines.  But they are different lengths.  You may get away with a few mm different, or you may not.

J&R compatibility charts aren't known for their accuracy.  I don't think that shaft in the screenshot will be for the Powershift at all.  If you can provide a cross referencing part number then I may be able to double check.

Thank you for that very comprehensive answer Tom. I couldn't see how it would be possible for one drive shaft to fit so many engines and gearbox combinations, but began to doubt myself when the OP posted the eBay information.

It's little wonder that so many would be home mechanics have problems getting parts to fit when the suppliers are giving such incorrect information.

Indeed.  Many garages now refuse to fit customer supplied parts for that reason as well.

Thanks for these details Tom, it saved me a lot of hassle.

One more thing if you don't mind, when I phoned ford and have been told only full drive shaft or cv boot, when all I needed really is the outer cv joint, lad on the phone said to me try ECP but they don't sell it for this model so I contacted a well known car part place on ebay, provide them with my car Reg and my vin number for the cv joint, they send me the link for the outer joint to fit on mine, what make me confused on the description it said they fit manual aswell, I know the outer cv joint might be the same between auto and manual but will this outer joint fits on  the splines on my drive shaft?

These are the cross reference for the outter cv joint part

Can't answer that one I'm afraid.  As the outer joints are not available separately from Ford, they don't have any part numbers for me to cross reference against to check the shaft splines.

The Ford part numbers on the compatibility list there are for the outer joint plus the shaft together in one assembly.  They may be compatible but the correct numbers for your car are below.

Left Outer - 1879574

Right Outer - 1879573

Thanks Tom,

I went under the car today and managed to get the driveshaft number for from the sticker,  it is (F1F1-3B437-EB) can you cross reference this number or did Ford designed this shaft for this model only?

Thanks

That number is for the complete shaft with both joints.  Catalogue reference 2048627.

Looks like that one is used for both 1.5 TDCI & 2.0 TDCI but only with the DCT450 Powershift gearbox.

What about the 6DCT451? Will the same apply as mine is the above number

451 isn't listed on the public parts catalogue.  I'm not sure of the exact difference between 450 & 451, they may be similar enough to be listed together.

Can someone help me where I find Ford focus estate 2015 diesel automatic transmission left side driveshaft Part no is F1F1-3B437-EB
