Anyome had a Dual Mass Flywheel DMF failure on a Powershift?

Featured Replies

Afternoon All,

Had our car in at a third garage for investigation of a recent issue (lots of vibration into cabin, juddering when pulling away and particularly when slowing down or stopping, often feels like car's about to stall when slowing for a roundabout or similar, worst/most juddery when start/stop cutting in or when moving in reverse). First two garages couldn't identify the issue (no warning lights or codes) but the third has said they think the issue is vibration coming from one or both of a degraded crankshaft pulley system and/or DMF.

I confess I actually wasn't a 100% sure if the Powershifts *had* a DMF (online is a bit fuzzy but seems to lean towards them having!) and I just wondered if anyone had experience of getting a DMF replaced on a Powershift TDCi?

I'd be interested if your symptoms tallied with the above/if the replacement sorted it and what sort of cost was involved?

I initially suspected it might be a transmission issue of some sort, felt a bit like a clutch issue in a manual, so in some ways a DMF (while not cheap) might be preferable to a Powershift problem! Keen to try and confirm if likely to be *only* a DMF issue or if any risk of transmission issue in the mix also as I might not want to embark on the c. £1,400 I've been quoted for crankshaft pulley and DMF if there might then be £1,000's of Powershift stuff to follow...

Any thoughts most appreciated!

Afternoon All,

Just for reference for any future enquiries, similar query posted on the Mondeo forum and confirmed by a dealer is that the Powershift in the Galaxy doesn'y use a dual mass flywheel. So some clarity but back to the drawing board for m ein terms of diagnostics unfortunately!

Just a wee update to the above, the saga was eventually solved by having.....the dual-mass flywheel changed! Despite many online sources and the dealer themselves (!) saying there wasn't one, the 2017 Galaxy at least, does. I have a suspicion that this confusion may stem from the possible fairly quick succession of different transmissions used on the Galaxy in the c. 16-18 window. I think it appears that the 6DCT450 (which I don't believe uses a DMF) was used initially, then switched potentially to the 6DCT451 for a relatively brief window around 2017 (which I believe does use a DMF) before moving to the newer 8-speed TC transmission with the Ecoblue diesel engine from late 18/19.

I don't have a documentary source for the above, that's just my suspicion after spending literally months trying to get garages to quote for the right replacement part. But got there in the end!

Hope that helps keep the record straight....

All the best,

Sandy

Hi, I have the same gearbox, the 2017 with the DMF, coincidence or not I am not sure but after powershift oil change, I have been experiencing vibration through the body at low revs and idle, I have a suspicion it may be the DMF. I do not have any juddering, the car drives perfect aside from the vibration which seems worse when cold, did you have any early signs or just all at once?

How much did it cost in the end to have replaced? did you take the opportunity to have any work done on the powershift box whilst removed?

Hope your car is still going strong.

Thanks

Morning David,

Yes I would say the first sign I noticed was increased vibration albeit as I think it would probably have been winter, I just put it down to cold weather diesel noise initially. That then progressed over the next 6-9 months or so into the more noticeable issues mentioned above. Ultimately, I think it cost around £1,400 or thereabouts for the DMF change (the part itself is fairly expensive, c. £800 or something like that I think it was). I also got a powershift service done at the same time as they had it for such a long time doing the repair which added cost (they thought they might lose the oil from the box potentially anyway during the DMF job). The garage had suggested I might want to have the transmission inspected by a powershift specialist/overhauled while they had it out during the DMF change albeit that didn't end up happening unfortunately due to timing issues but think I probably would have done if it had lined up. My concern had been that driving for an extended period with a 'degraded' DMF might have affected the overall transmission in any way but it didn't appear to. I used the vehicle for some time successfully after the DMF change (which addressed all the symptoms) and, while I've since sold the vehicle, I don't believe it caused any further issues after that. I had a 'Click4Warranty' used policy at the time which made a decent contribution to the overall costs albeit probably still cost me over a thousand ultimately.

Hope you get yours sorted soon and in my experience, probably better to get it done once you're first starting to notice it rather than pushing all that vibration through the gearbox any longer than you need to.

Best of luck!
