Transit issue - check engine and limo mode when in 6th gear

Featured Replies

Hi, I have a 2015 Ford transit van (converted to a campervan). Have a reoccurring issue and struggling to get a diagnosis so hoping someone here has experienced similar and can help. Service engine now alert coming on and van goes into limp mode (hill assist off, traction control off), only happens when going around 70mph in 6th gear for about 10 minutes on the motorway. Stop and restart engine and it goes away but then will come on again when back into 6 gear for a while. Nothing showing on diagnostics when checked at garage, check engine light clears and only show at the time. First happened not long after we bought the van last year, had the turbo charger replaced, was fine for about 6 months but has started up again. Had in a local garage, ran diagnostics and looked at electrics but found nothing. Took back to fuel injection specialist that replaced turbo, they said the DPF needed cleaning so did this but same issue happened again straight away. Got forscan software to read codes as the issue occurs, we have an old code for an underboost issue (event from March) and a ABS code which updates every time we have the issue (the event date/time is for that current issue), the ABS code just says that there is invalid data received.  Anyone have any ideas?

Very likely a faulty ABS wheel speed sensor. Usually FORScan would say which wheel sensor is at fault. What DTC have you got ?

Hello,

Having a similar issue. The van goes into limp mode once on the motorway. Engine warning light, ABS warning comes on. Would the van go into limp mode if an ABS sensor was faulty?  The Turbo has been reconditioned and the ERG and  and boost pressure pipe have been replaced but still no joy.

Did you solve the problem in the end Barry?

Sorry didn’t realise I had any responses! I’ve attached a photo of the forscan code we get at the time when it happens, there’s no codes showing however when we’ve had diagnostics done at garage

No unfortunately not, we put it into a fuel injection specialist, they said no codes but DPF needed cleaning, cleaned and gave it back to us. Should have pushed for more investigation in hindsight but hoped that might of helped. Did the same thing straight away when we tested on motorway.  Then had a full service as was due. If anything had got worse, needed to drive it this week as moving away and now it seems to have low power even without throwing fault and going into limp mode. Having to go into 2nd to get it up an inclines.
sorry to hear your having the same issues, not great to hear that you’ve tried the ERG and checking boost pipes as that was our hope for next steps!  Have you had ABS sensors looked at?

The U0401:68 is bit of an odd ball code. It's a problem on the Canbus system with corrupt data between modules. It would be easy to jump to the conclusion that there was a problem with PCM, but I would be more inclined to think this will be a damaged/corroded wire or connector. Has anyone inspected the wiring of the PCM connectors ? You need to open the plugs up and check for wires with damaged insulation.

We had it in a local garage, they looked into wiring, found something added onto the fuse box, it’s a converted campervan that converted by the previous owner and we didn’t know what this would be, they removed it incase that was causing issue but didn’t report anything else. I don’t know if they checked the PCM connectors though.
Would this kind of wiring issue cause the loss of power though?  Even without check engine coming on and going into limp mode, it is struggling with power on inclines, in 2nd gear crawling at 5mph, won’t go above 2000revs.
Appreciate the help btw!

Hi.

Have a similar problem with my ford transit 2015 jumbo. Did you get any resolution to this.or.does it still have a problem?

Cheers

Did you ever get this sorted. My Jumbo is acting the same

Hi. Just an update on this. TBC but I've just had mine repaired and it appears that the ABS ring had a fracture/eventually a crack in it.

Had them bothe replaced and the scensors. Tonight will be my first long journey in it where I will find out if it has solved the problem.

Worth getting your garage to check the ABS rings though.
