Brand new 24 Focus...dead

Featured Replies

So, got my new Focus ST-Line X (155 MHEV) end of March. Loved it until one day drove 30 miles to an appointment, came out 30 mins later and car was dead.  Well, the headlights, rear lights and interior lights were alive but nothing else.  Pressing start button simply turned these on or off. Screens didn't come on except the red parking brake symbol.  Trying to start it did nothing.  No ticking or anything.  Assumed it was battery so got a jump start and it came alive but with no speedometer or other gauges.  Let it run a while and then restarted and got a power train malfunction and 12V charging fault warning on the app.  Spanner symbol on the dash but everything else worked.   Assumed it was a fluke.  Or that my dash cam was depleting battery so pulled that.  Took it on 60 mile run on motorway.  Next four days no problems. Spanner disappeared next day btw.

Roll on to the Sunday. At a friend's house. Came out after an hour and same thing.  Had to get jump started again.  Same warnings on app (powertrain malfunction).  So called Ford the Monday.  And couldn't get it in until Monday there (3rd June).  So bought battery charger and jump started.  Happened again at work.  Jump starter worked first time.  Used battery charger and it went to full after several hours.  Few days later - going to work in morning and dead.  Jump starter didn't work.  Battery charger said was at 0.  Called RAC who came out and said there is something wrong (volt meter on).  Wasn't acting appropriately when demanding power (heated windscreen, seats and full blower) or revving the engine? Anyway Monday came and I took it in

They updated the BCM software and charged the battery. It was holding it and started several times.  I came down just there to pick it up... didn't start.  "Chief technician" came out apologetically but rubbing his head.   I am on the verge of rejecting this car.  I simply do not trust it.   I appreciate things go wrong sometimes but in a 6 weeks old car??

Reject it and never go back.

Given the serious nature of the issue, you've purchased more than 30 days ago but less than 6 months from a dealer AND the dealer has had an attempt at resolving the issue, you should now be able to reject the car on the basis that the vehicle is "not of satisfactory quality".

If the dealer hadn't yet had an attempt at fixing it, you'd have to give them the option of attempting to fix it (and fail) before you'd be entitled to reject it.

I can't understand why you faffed with jump starting and charging a brand new car.

Just phone the Ford recovery service and they take the car to the nearest dealer and get it sorted, no need to book

If it still plays up after they allege they've fixed it, reject it

Hey everyone. Still saga with the car.  They have replaced the sensor and updated software. Failed to fix.  Changed the battery.  Failed to fix.  And now the body control module was replaced this week. You guessed it, failed to fix. So now I've to await the actual Ford "Master" technician to have a look. But that may take 4 weeks. They've had it 6 weeks tomorrow already! I'm in discussions about rejecting it. Ridiculous.

While waiting I would ask them to replace the Battery Monitor Sensor (BMS). It doesn't cost very much and is easy to replace. I've known of one case of a faulty BMS causing a poor ground (negative) connection and the car would act as if the battery was flat even when it wasn't.

Phone Ford CRC and reject the car. Simple

Make them give you another new one, if you absolutely must, or your money back.

Hello.  The saga is (hopefully) over for me and the Focus.  The master technician came up and fixed it.  It was faulty connections/wiring to the BCM and battery junction box causing the problems. Replaced these. They kept it for a week and it did not have the same issues. I have had it for 5 days and seems to be running well.  I still don't trust it.  But even one fault and it will be rejected - Ford CRC well aware that's what will be happening.   PS that was 9 weeks and one day from me delivering it to getting it back!

This was the first thing they did. Then I went to collect it and it didn't start in their car park...
