No Keys detected ..Focus 2020

Featured Replies

Went for breakfast with my daughter and wife and on the way home i dropped my wife home but continued to go elsewhere with my daughter .

Got a phone 📞 call from my  wife , she had my keys in her bag .

Had to keep driving home to get my keys from my wife and then continued to bring my daughter shopping , so I got my daughter after I parked to walk away with my car keys , while car running .

The No Key detection came up but only stayed on screen for a very brief while

Should  it not stay on the screen , as you can miss it very easily .

Thanks

It says on long enough for most 🤣

2 secs … easily missed

anyway off changing settings ?

It could be distracting to stay on the screen for long.  None of the messages do while you're driving.  (And no, it can't be changed).

Trouble is, the Mk4 Focus throws so many warning messages from the moment you get in that we all just get used used to 'OK'ing them all off the screen without even reading them.  That means when an important one like this appears, it is easy to miss.  Don't think there's any solution unfortunately.

It goes off after 2 secs even if you haven’t drove off yet ….

You could easily start your car in your garden and run in and a grab a jacket and drop your keys and when you get back in your car , there would be no warning ⚠️ .

You could drive to another county and have no way of starting your car as your keys are at home or wherever they dropped when you got out off the car with the keys in your pocket .

You must live a far more chaotic life than I do.  Can't imagine getting all the way outside without a jacket on.  Let alone dropping the key without noticing.  And I certainly don't run anywhere.

In that scenario, there would be another warning tone and message when you got back in the car.  But I agree it is easy to miss amongst all the other warnings.  There's still no way to change it.

Just would like the warning to stay on as you drive off ? then I could just go back and get keys .

personally think you should have the choice in settings ….

just tried taking battery out of remote and figured out you can start car with no battery in remote .

Might leave spare remote hidden in car with no battery in it … for such emergency ( not sure if worth the risk ?)

I do understand what you're asking for, but Ford don't give us options for everything unfortunately.  There are a few more I'd have liked as well.

Keeping the spare in the car is definitely a risk.  I'm not sure a thief would bother looking for one, once they're inside they just plug into the OBD port as quickly as possible and start the car without the keys anyway.  However if you accidentally lost the main key at home, you wouldn't have any way to get into the car to access the spare.  I suppose you could keep the emergency blade in the house, but that's so small it could easily get lost on it's own.  Ultimately your decision on which risk is the least likely in your situation I guess.

I love this thread - illustrates everything I hate about 'keyless' keys. I love that my old jalopy, you gotta shove the bit of metal into the ignition barrel, twist it - car starts. Twist it to off, car stops. Simply ingenious 🤣

That's one very big advantage of an EV.

You could be very sure you wouldn't get far before needing to stop and recharge 🤣

But what if there's no signal?

Or the car battery has gone flat?

Or maybe your phone is wherever the keys are (in the pocket of that jacket you leant a visitor last night who's now driven 200 miles home)?

Tom, I had to re read that a couple of times as occasionally we have differing opinions on 'tech' issues. However, I couldn't agree more. Last week whilst in Lidl, EE was having a hissy fit, so I was unable to open their app giving me discount on selected items, and if I paid using phone (which I absolutely don't), I'd be standing there with no means to pay for shopping.

Our reliance on 'phone' tech will soon bite us hard in the bottom when the Russians hack our internet, and we are left holding metal/plastic bricks wondering where did it all go so wrong...

I’ve never had any issues opening car with my phone 📱

Great sentiment. The Titanic was perfectly seaworthy, until it wasn't 🤣

If the car battery goes flat you will need the emergency key blade to gain access.  Your phone will not work in that case.

Or if the phone loses signal.  There's a local mast down where I live at the moment.  Meaning that the FordPass app wouldn't work unless you're near enough to an accessible WiFi signal.  And the app itself is not 100% reliable either, that goes down occasionally.

The risks are not equal for all of us, we each have to choose which are the most likely in our circumstances.  Personally I've never had an issue with a keyless fob and wouldn't even consider keeping a spare inside the car.  But I have had issues with flat batteries, so would keep a jump starter handy, for example.  Ultimately it's your choice.

That sounds like LIDL being tight tbh.  Other supermarkets offer free WiFi which would have negated this issue, and saved you paying for data.

I rarely use a phone for contact, so wasn't bothered about the mast being down.  Then within an hour of noticing the lost signal, I realised I couldn't log into ebay without the code from the text sent by 2-step verification!  Luckily they also offer codes sent by email, so I could use that on WiFi.  The mast has now been down for several days, so I do wonder how other locals are coping if they are reliant on mobile phone contact or only have internet access using data.

I don't believe that tech is necessarily bad, in fact I think it's better in many cases when it's working, but I do think we should keep as many options open as possible.  I'm sure I've mentioned on here before, I did once forget my wallet in a brain fog as we were coming out of the final lockdown.  I still don't really know how it happened, but I was left completely unable to pay for my shopping after having exhausted myself trying to get round the supermarket, and had no option but to leave it all there and go back another day to go through the whole process again with my wallet.  If I'd had the option to pay for the shopping on my phone, that would have saved a huge amount of hassle and effort.  If I ever get back to that point, I will make sure I've always got some sort of payment app setup on my phone to reduce the risk of that happening again.

Just to go off topic a little, if you have Wi-Fi calling (on an Android Phone) does that not allow SMS Texts?, I've never tried.

WhatsApp does allow calling and messaging to your contacts who have WhatsApp and some business users with Wi-Fi.

Yes it does, I don't get a mobile signal at home so rely totally on WiFi calling. I do get calls & texts...

Ah that's interesting.  I didn't even consider that feature.  I don't generally use calls or texts and don't have WhatsApp either so never needed it before.  I could try it later, unless the mast gets fixed in the meantime.

My SIM is unusual though, it's a proper old style PAYG SIM, no rolling monthly requirement.  I was initially told it could be tethered to my sat nav for traffic updates in 2018...  Until it was all setup and wouldn't tether.  Asked a few places and they all said it should tether.  At that point I went into the actual shop to ask, and was told this SIM couldn't tether...  So I don't know if there's anything else it can't do compared to the vast majority.

Mast is still down.  I can't see any options for WiFi calling at all.  Where should they be?  Motorola phone on Android 10.

I won't put any payment or banking apps on my phone. Just a few days ago there was an item on, I think, The One Show about the rise in mobile phone thefts where people have lost significant amounts of money from thieves using stolen phones to buy stuff or access bank accounts.

Your Service Provider needs to Provision it for you in most cases and a lot of them will only do it if you have certain Plans, I doubt they will do it for you.

Their website will have more information.

Tom, it is also phone dependent. I use to have a home booster that plugged into my broadband router, use to give me a 5 bar bubble around my whole house, brilliant. Except, last year it was disconnected as it ran on 3G which the UK decided it didn't need anymore. I had to upgrade my handset as the one I had didn't do WiFi calling.

Really annoying too in that WiFi calling for many manufactures isn't counted as a feature, so when trying to compare phones, you can see how many pixels their silly little camera uses, but not if it has WiFi calling capability!! As I say, modern tech, I despair...

I would go into your phone, 'settings', and do a search bar look for "WiFi calling" and see if anything pops up...
