ABS/Hill Start Assist/City Stop Faults

Featured Replies

Apologies tried searching Forum but couldnt find the issue.

Have 3.5 Focus Estate 1.5tdci. Have faukt codes(& correponding messages)for ABS/Hill Start Assist/City Smart Stop. I guess a sensor needs replacing?I guess also that this would be a straightforward&relatively inexpensive job for garage?

Would I be guessing right please (sensors on screen not blocked by dirty windscreen or anything)

thanks Petet

Probably not would be my answer.

All of those problems are nearly always caused by the car battery having a low "State Of Charge" (SOC)

Do you have a multimeter ?

If so measure the battery voltage approximately 1 hour after the car has been parked and see what result you get.

Usually a good 12 hour charge with a Smart battery charger is all that is required to get things back to normal.

Thanks for that reply, I'll test it out tomorrow and put it on charge if necessary. I certainly wouldnt have thought it was the battery.

Thanks again

I think it's very likely that @unofix is correct here however I just thought I would point out my recent experience.

I've had a very similar set of codes occur and in my case it was related to a brake boost pressure sensor and a faulty abs sensor. The stop start system often doesn't work if there is an issue with the brake system. Don't ask me why...

For me when I cleared all the codes I was left with the two problem codes which returned instantly. I replaced both sensors and then stop start hill assist etc all working again.

Like I said, likely the battery but if it doesn't might be worth a try.

Thanks for taking time to comment, I’ll obv check battery first as I can do that! If still an issur I’ll get the garage to check it out/fix it etc.

These linked faults are quite often caused by a faulty abs sensor. Reading the codes should tell you more.

Thanks I’ll check the codes when I get the chance. I did connect Forscan butvstupidly didnt take enough notice of the actual fault codes. A fault of inexperience in these matters obviously.

SOC when used multimetre was 12.15 so on charge for the day to see if that does solve things. Battery is just 5yrs old so may change it, must be approaching ‘end of life’

A brief update it may help others at some point. I will get new battery soon but since charging etc the abs/city stop/hill start assist lights haven't appeared. A couple of times oil light came on with eml but oil all good. Probably another indicator of insufficient battery power.

Good result and a fairly cheap fix.

It does sound like you probably need to replace the battery. Remember to charge the new battery for 12 hours before fitting it 👍

Yes thanks I do plan to replace battery very soon, it is coming up to 5yrs old anyway, didnt realise it was that long since I got the battery.

Bit of supplementary info to aid in this topic and thanks for useful battery charge table contributed from @unofix.

The BMS does gradually disable driver assist features as the charge drops. I recall Stop/Start wasn't functioning when test driving car which hadn't been driven for some time. It was eventually re-enabled after I bought the car.  Most recently, Stop/Start failed about couple of years ago then as the original Ford battery approached 10 years (this year), the dashboard started to light-up with ABS fault/Active City Stop fault icons.  Hidden Test screen (see below) showed charge at 11.7v/11.8v (engine off) but 14.6v (engine on), which doesn't quite align with @unofix's table since keyless entry was still functioning througout.

Have just replaced my battery with the initial annoyance that manual doesn't specify compatible batteries within specifications, particularly since they're now located in a battery box (internal dimensions not provided for this part either). I can confirm max. length is 317 mm (EFB110). Although EFB096 is an alternative battery it's height (190 mm) indicated it could be quite tight with the box's ceiling, noting that the negative cable needs to run across the top of battery within box and out the other end to bolt onto the cars bodywork.

  • Tip #1: Although I have a multimeter (analogue), note that Focus Mk3 has a built-in (hidden) Test menu which enables you to check battery charge before starting engine and afterwards.
    • Access it by pressing steering wheel menu 'OK' button and turning ignition key to Accessory/On selection and release OK button when you see TEST on-screen (For keyless start, simply press OK button then Start button without pressing on clutch pedal for Accessory/On mode, releasing OK button after TEST screen initates).
    • Cycle through the various options until battery voltage is displayed. Can also proceed to start engine and continue monitoring battery. [I found my analogue multimeter to indicate approx. 0.5v higher than Test menu]
  • Tip #2: If you perform battery replacement yourself, use following steps to reset the BMS:
    • Ignition switch to Accessory/On mode (Keyless: press Start button without clutch pedal)
    • Within 10 seconds, Press Rear Fog light button 5 times
    • Press Hazzard warning button 3 times
    • Wait around 5-10 seconds for dashboard Battery icon to flash 3 times which confirms BMS reset. [Repeat, if not]
  • Tip #3: New batteries typically have good charge and may even have an indicator on top to show when battery needs to be replaced (e.g. turns Red).
  • Tip #4: Configuration of Airbox hose attachment differs between Mk3 models so the jubilee clip had to be detatched last and attached first before airbox re-installation in order to position the mounts.

The 'not so hidden' test menu is about as useful as a chocolate bleeza (photo's below). The voltages displayed are of the regulated voltage of the instrument cluster and do not reflect the actual system voltage of the vehicle. It will typically show a voltage reading of approximately 0.5 to 0.6V lower.

When you say....

Was that on all passenger doors ? It generally disables you being able to touch the handle of a passenger door to activate unlocking. The drivers door will continue to function until about 40% SOC
