Engine malfunction

Featured Replies

Hi , 2 days ago, going nicely I had an audible alarm and the words “engine malfunction” came up on the dash. No loss of speed, steering - all that went were the speedo, rev counter, temp and fuel gauges went to zero. I couldn’t get out of the line of overtaking traffic, and 2 mins later, with a very small jump or jolt, words went, all gauges came back. Happened 3 times on way home. Next day - all good, no alerts. Today however I got another one. Has anyone any ideas ? We put the code reader and it said display error, but it was only the gauges that dropped to zero, the display continued with the malfunction ?

This looks like the classic instrument cluster cracked solder joint problem. If the cluster has never been resoldered it will need doing anyway as the joints invariably crack over time due to the use of lead-free solder.

They should have the lead-free stuff removed and be resoldered with normal leaded solder. Member @rd457 offers a competitive repair service.

No, sorry, I'm up in Shropshire. People normally post them to me. You can find my service here on ebay: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/314393033915

Note that this is a matter of electronics repair, which is outside of the wheelhouse of most mechanics.
