 ah now i understand why you said it would make it easier to charge in the future, instead of crocodile clips, i just have to basically plug the charger in and that is it. brilliant idea!! 🙂

@froggy8 I use an Optimate 6. I have it connected almost every time that the car is on the drive for more than a couple of days. Photos attempt to show my permanently connected lead.

I'm luvin' the way it's hung on the wall with a bit of string! Being lazy, I'd have used a cable tie 🤣

i would have been even lazier and used the bike chain

hi guys

my new battery turned up today so thought i would put it on charge, it started off charging at 13, 14 then 15! isnt 15v bit too much or is that normal? i would have thought it would be full at 13.6 or somehwere around there.

bit concerned at that high voltage.

Charging voltage needs to be higher than battery voltage.

Standard charging rate for a 12v battery is around 14 volts, but it's perfectly safe to go up to around 16 volts.

The charger is only telling you what it's charging rate is at that moment though.  The battery isn't holding 15 volts when it says that on the display.  In fact, you can pretty much ignore the display voltage for the first few hours if it's a Maypole.  Just wait for all the bars to be solid on the side, and the background to change from red to green.  That's when the battery is charged.  You'll probably see the voltage around 12.4v at that point on a an older battery as the charger settles to a low trickle or even stops charging altogether.

Many thanks for that, I feel much better now 😊

Hi guys, anyone know if this charger is good enough to charge a battery in a diesel car?

Which one? My Optimate 6 would be perfectly suitable.

Resurrecting this thread with a bit of a left-field question but I'm hoping someone in the know can help....one of my elderly neighbour's has a 73-plate Toyota Yaris Hybrid but rarely uses it from day to day so, consequently, the battery keeps going flat. Toyota have already replaced it once under warranty but after it went flat again today, they have told her it is down to lack of use and have advised her to get a trickle charger. Does anyone know if this Maypole will be suitable for a hybrid please as I've no experience of trickle chargers ??

Since our resident Maypole expert is temporally absent from the forum, I'm sure he'll not mind if I answer.

Yes the Maypole will be just fine for the Toyota Yaris Hybrid. All you are doing is charging a regular 12V battery.

There is the regular 4 Amp version and a slightly higher output 5 Amp version.

4A = https://www.amazon.co.uk/Maypole-7423A-Battery-Charger-Electronic/dp/B009A83P1E/ref=sr_1_1

5A = https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/388978974775

Either will do the job. Just remember to connect the negative lead to the vehicle chassis earth point not the battery terminal.

Cheers Unofix...the font of all knowledge as usual 👍

I use an Optimate 6, but mine isn't a hybrid. I have it connected and working any time my car is not being used. Highly recommended as it doesn't just charge, it also tests and cycles the battery to prolong it's life.

Thanks Pater Ant...will have a look at those too 👍
