2007 Fiesta adjustable mirrors issue

Featured Replies

Hi folks,

Had an account on her many moons ago but cannot remember the email I used so here I go again.

Have a long standing problem on a family members 2007 Fiesta. The car has the standard electric adjustable mirrors (no folding). The passenger side mirror does not move in any of the 4 directions via the mirror switch. It has been fine to live with since owning, but it is now needed for the driving test.

I have replaced the mirror switch and the mirror. Since then I have confirmed the switches work and both the old and new replacement mirror work when plugged into the drivers side but neither in the passenger side. I have confirmed continuity between all the wiring and basics like fuses from the best of my ability but trying to fault find it any further is proving difficult. Is there any log of voltages and which pins I should expect them on etc on the passenger side. The heated mirror function works on the passenger mirror and all other electric functions in the door work too on passenger side (central locking and power window).

Anyone ever suffer something similar?

Much appreciated.

Similar, but of no help to you whatsoever. Last year my passenger mirror failed any electrical adjustment. Bought a used one on Ebay (with a broken case), and my guy swapped the internal motor over to my one. It's worked perfectly ever since.  Good luck...

Mirror motors work on standard 12v feed.  There's nothing particularly clever about them.

Have you checked for continuity from the switch plug through to the mirror plug?  I'd have been fairly sure of a broken wire in one of the door looms if both switches & mirrors have been confirmed as working.  But it looks like you've tested those to some extent.

Yes I believe I got continuity on either 3 or 4 wires from mirror switch on drivers side to mirror connector on passenger.

Is there any pinouts or do you know where I should expect to see the 12v in the passenger side? I am thinking if I even tried to loop a 12v feed from somewhere else in the door possibly.

You are under estimating the complexity of how the door mirror motors are controlled. Yes there are two 12V motors that move the mirror but it is not a case of the switch just applying power. I do not have the circuit diagrams for the Fiesta Mk6.5 2007 model, but just to give you an idea of how they work (3 door is different to 5 door) here are the circuits for the Fiesta Mk7 2012 model.

The attached diagram for the earlier mk6 Fiesta should give you a better idea of the wiring.
I think the door to body connector details changed so you need to work that out for yourself.

For both motors not working on the passengers side I would start at the switch connector pin3, with any luck it will have 2 wires at the connector as shown in the diagram and even luckier if your inter-door wiring is not all black wires. Trace this wire back through to the passenger side. Easier said than done so good luck..

Okay so here are my findings. Picture below is the connector block at my left hand side passenger mirror. All black wires on the right come from the body side of the car.

In terms of the wires on the left going to the mirror I get.

12v+ on the yellow/orange, white and white blue when I move the mirror joystick around when the passenger side is selected. So voltage going here and seems to be working? All of these wires seem to be mirror adjustment related yet no mirror movement.

The black/grey wire gets 12v+ when the heated mirror button is activated. The black therefore must be just acting as an earth loop for the heated mirror circuit.

So where does that leave me? 7 black wires come from the body side of the connector into only 5 feeding wires on the mirror side. If I have 12v each time I move the joystick to the mirror motor, is there an earth I should be then testing? The mirror will move fine if I plug it into the drivers side so there must be something simple I am missing? Everything to make it work is seemingly there but nothing moves.

Thanks!

You have found the right 3 wires to check but you have to check for voltage with the connector disconnected.
You should then find that one of the wires does not show any voltage.

I believe I did actually test initially earlier on with the mirror disconnected and I think one wire showed nothing.

I'll test again in the morning, if I do find one of them 3 wires is not showing any voltage is that confirmation of a broken wire?

Thanks!

Yes. Probably going to be the wire that connects to the solid white wire of the mirror.

Problem fixed. I'll post an update here later of expected voltages and what does what later on. Turned out to be a broken wire (amongst several damaged others on the brink) inside the driver's door rubber harness. A huge thanks for your help!

If any needs these voltages for reference if your suffering from the same issue.

When mirror is plugged in

I got 12v on yellow/orange, white blue and white when the passenger switch is moved to the right. I didnt get any voltage on any of them 3 wires when the switch is moved down or left.

When the mirror was unplugged I got no 12v anywhere on white wire no matter what direction. I got 12v on white blue on up direction only and I get 12v on yellow orange on right only. Again no 12v on any when going left or down.

Last check then I did was to confirm I have continuity from the door plug from the door to all of them wires on the passenger side. I unplugged the harness from the door and just did each wire one by one. Continuity with all of them was then confirmed.

On the drivers side when the mirror was unplugged you should get blue/white wire 12v when in the up direction, yellow orange is 12v going right and white is 12v left and down. It pointed to me that my white wire behaviour was not the same on the passenger side, yet my wiring seemed okay based on continuity checks. I found it unlikely the wires would be damaged in the cabin so I cut the wiring harness and found damage as shown. Hope this helps if anyone needs help with the same issue.
