SYNC3 update, change method part way through?

Featured Replies

I've previously updated Sync & maps via USB. This time I'm using wi-fi but it's taking forever - I started on 13 June, I believe it's finished downloading the Sync files (Version 23188) and it's currently Installing 4U5T-14G422-BAK but there's no guessing how much longer it will take.. My question is, could I simply switch off automatic updates at this stage and install the whole thing via USB over the top, or is this likely to cause a problem?

Thanks

Thanks Dave

I did the same thing recently, turned of the wifi update part way as it was taking way too long and updated via usb. Didn't have any issues.

Thanks Metal - did the sync3 update in quick time (it had already installed via wi-fi) and the maps only took about 45 mins in just 1 cycle (again, was partially installed via wi-fi), now the issue is the the car still showing Maps9 instead of Maps12, but from what I gather that's just down to Ford's totally crap systems...

Sorry to partly hijack this thread but I'm having problems installing both the SYNC 3 update (and subsequently the map update).

Tried both WiFi and USB - gave up on WiFi and tried USB.  Eventally (after several journeys), the 'Updating Software' message disappeared from the top of the display and I hoped that the SYNC 3 update had worked.

Plugged the USB into my pc and went to Ford's update website so that the update file from the car could be uploaded to Ford and the map update become available, but no map update - still says that a SYNC 3 update is available.

Off and on, this has taken around 2 months so far and I seem to be no further forward.  What an absolutely CRAP update procedure!!  Youcouldn't design a clunkier system if you tried.

Anyhow, a couple of questions if I may.

When you try the update via WiFi and connect to your home network, can the car just be left to get on with it or do you still have to have the engine running (and if so, I presume that you can't drive off somewhere thereby disconnecting from your home WiFi)?

If the above is true, can you update via WiFi by connecting the car to a mobile phone hotspot (thereby maintaining the WiFi connection)?  I presume not.

Zaphod,

From what I can gather, the wi-fi downloads only continue for a short time after turning the engine off, so 4Gb sync3.4 data plus 23Gb map data is gonna take forever.  It took me about 5 weeks just to complete sync (from version 20351 to version 21388) and that involved a lot of trips outside to run the engine for a few minutes. (Bear in mind I'm retired and the car spends 95% of the time on the drive). It then started to download the map files, but it still showed sync version 20351 on the Ford website whereas it was version 21388 showing in the car. That meant I still couldn't access the maps update on the website because the sync version hadn't updated. I presume that I would have to wait until maps was updated over wi-fi and fully installed before it sent confirmation to Ford.  So I decided to cut my losses and turn off auto-updates and download the sync21388 update to USB as explained on my original post above.  I then installed it (engine running) which took about an hour. Then I uploaded the log file to Ford which gave me access to the map update (Maps12).  This took just over 3 hours to install (including a system reboot in the middle) with engine running, then another 1 minute to generate the maps log file which I uploaded to Ford, job done.  By the way, the Ford guide to updates OTA says hotspots are a no-no.

You will need a 32Gb USB drive for the map update, and obviously around 3 free hours to sit in your car - [NOTE: I did get an alert about an hour(?) into this process to say the engine would auto shut down in 30 seconds, press OK button to override, so watch out for that!] - Make sure you don't turn the engine off until it tells you to on the display. Also, the "updating software" message disappeared on mine after a time and I was tempted to switch off, but it reappeared some minutes later.. As I say, just let it run until it tells you "Part 1 is complete, switch off and restart at your earliest convenience" or words to that effect - I think you need to turn off, get out, lock doors, wait a minute or two then restart - then it will generate the log file for you to upload.

If there's anything you're not clear about please get back to me - Good luck, and let us know how you get on.
